    update

    pic 1-2

tray (tub) one side sanded and then painted, nice to see some green paint on or in the tub
2nd pic, underside required more scrapping again to clean up, not finished yet
did some more touch up paint in and around the firewall
tray is not in bad shape overall though has wobbles and distortions in the alum from probably placing heavy items in the back, not going to replace or bog to get smooth just hammer out offending pieces and leave as is. never wanted this to be a show pony just practical

    update

p1 rear cross member inner side was in need of some cleaning up and repainting

p2 rear cross member painted, yay

p3 started to look into the condition of the fuel tank, just needed some cleaning up so i thought ...

p4 steel wire brush on drill revealed this horrible mess underneath, almost like putty covering up the condition, not good

p5 more cleaning revealed this tank is history, luckily for me i think i have another spare tank so will look into another tank. i did have another tank which had holes in it so that one is history as well, just need time to fish out the other tank hopefully is in better condition

p6 the internals of this tank seem on face value in reasonable condition... wire looks newish condition not to bad compared to the tank, not sure how to check condition but work on that later

p7 condition of the battery cage before

p8 during cleaning and scraping of the old paint

p9 freshly painted in black. i know its got the bit on the side cut off for the oil cleaner not bothered as this has the holden engine fitted.

    Back from Cooma

p1 before shot of rear of tub, sanded, wire brushed but not to bare alum

p2 after shot with some new paint, straight into it after our Cooma trip, this paint was brushed on not sprayed even though have a spray gun. paint is dabbed on, is slower but seems like an ok finish (to me anyway) again not looking for a perfect finish

p3 while i was at it thought to paint the outer skin of the rear tub whilst i was in the mood

p4 making sure to paint the lower lip as well, this was what i was intending to paint first but got distracted by the other panels

p5 the inner of the tub painted, sort of for now, the inner is a bit rough with holes and distortions but hey its a LR

p6 on our trip to Cooma with Tvan in tow, stopped at Maccas, D4 went great do dramas with towing, weather was hot during the day and colder at nights to be expected at this time of the year. reminded me of attending Cooma at 40th, 50th, 60th and now the 70th, which begs the question what about the 80th ???

I seem to remember there being a flat spring pivoted on one of the bolts.

IMAG1977.jpgIMAG1978.jpg It should have this spring steel clip bolted to the top of the detent . No 15 in photo from parts catalog. There should be a cork seal under the cap, I had new cork seals (Will check today if I have any left ) but I don't have any of the spring clips , but they should be easy to find 2nd hand just need to find some one who has a gear box with damaged internals . You really need to find a parts catalog they are more useful then a work shop manual as they show every part & the sequence the parts go together.

The spring clip was also fitted to Rover Cars P3 , P4 & P5 & I think on all Land Rovers up to & including S111.

No, the lid and spring clip were replaced by a welsh plug some time during 2a production. Which does not mean there are not later vehicles fitted with it!
