    I don't think that is possible the gearbox X members will stop you from lowering it down. You would better off unbolting everything & hiring a hoist for a couple of hours to lift it out or finding some one who will lone you one.

    Correct. Unless the chassis has been modified with removable flywheel and gearbox crossmembers, the only way out for engine and gearbox is up.

    I learnt this many years ago and I was in a position that I could not get the gearbox out the top due to the design of the garage.

    I cut the gearbox cross member out and dropped the gearbox down - I then fabricated a new cross member that was bolted to the chassis (4 bolts either side) so that it could be removed if I had to drop the gearbox again.

    small update

    Been a while, been busy with the D3 and D4.

    1. Purchased these new old engine mounts for the S1, pity the gearbox mounts are not the same.
    2. gearbox mounts in situ

    I have previously removed the engine and g'box by lowering the chassis to the ground then removing the two separate items and then raising the chassis above the engine and box which were by that stage sitting on the floor of the garage.

    Next will be removing the rear axle/diff when i get around to it. so then i can lower the rear end to the ground.

    decided to remove the rear diff axle assembly

    1-2 removed and set aside for now. that was quick coerced my son to help out and we did it in no time
    those damn bolts were a nightmare but plenty of degreaser and force got them out, hope i remember the way they go back together

    think the motor and box will be separated on the chassis next time

    1. gearbox mounts removed, didn't realise they were that small, now to find some replacement ones. could the larger engine mounts fit as well?
    2. handbrake disconnected, in prep for gearbox removal
    3. gearbox bolts all removed except the last one on the bottom, damn it. dropped the chassis to the floor so even harder to get at now.

    disconnected the battery and moved away, would love another garage to store half this car somewhere. front diff/suspension has 4 bolts remaining to remove as well so i can remove the front susp. cheers

    That sounds so familiar.

    Once you dismantle one, it seems impossible to know where to store the stuff without it getting further damaged & in the way. In my case I also had a stripped down late S2A LWB to gather dust. But I got there in the end.

    Been following this thread for a while, seems you got stuck with old.... "You can't just take one part mate, it's all or nothing, I don't want to be left with all the crap" Although you seem to have spares for everything.


    When I eventually have a clearance of my Shed Mezzanine Floor I will have to also make that clear to any buyers & I don't want them to drive up the road & dump what they don't want before they leave the property or sneak back at night & dump it over the fence.

    The S2A won't go with the sale of the property unless I get a magic offer for it to stay. It is great around here, ATM it has got a 100 litre spray tank in the back & 50' of hose. Tailgate off. We go everywhere together. I just wish it had power steering.

    Those mounts are for Series II & III. The Series I ones are two rubber parts (keep all metal parts).
    I have a pair, I think they were from 4-Wheel Drives in Hallam but most LR parts suppliers should have Series I mounts.

    1 starter motor removed
    2 didn't realise the gearbox mount was two pieces of rubber, anyway the fronts are later model but it has a holden motor so...
    3 clutch mechanism dismantled
    4 spring bolts removed for front susp, just need room to move that out of the way somewhere
    5 handbrake mechanism dismantled

    that damn lower single g/box nut will not loosen, think the head has been rounded off, will need to jack up the chassis to inspect better
    pretty much done to remove the box once remaining nut removed. also took off the gearbox to chassis brackets off.

    that elusive nut

    1 one nut remaining and cant seem to get enough grip to undo, have tried a variety of diff tools i have but to no avail. might need to weld on another nut or heat the nut, did soak in wd40. tried multi grips as well. no socket fits either too big or too small. might try hammer and chisel next, just in an awkward location and had to be the last remaining nut right under the vehicle (not on top) oh well ...
