    Tiny bit excited

Well its time, time to get another S1. Have been on the look out for less then 2weeks and have found one. Don't want to give away too much until its in my hot little hands and parked in our driveway but the trailer is booked for tomorrow morning early start. plan is to collect the beast return home unload return trailer and then take the pics. D4 is on standby for the tow. just need to collect some ropes, straps etc for securing S1 to trailer and the excitement is building. Have owned S1's before but it was time to return to the old simple mechanics of a LR, something to tinker with in my spare time. Not doing a full rebuild or resto but something to tidy up the old girl and return to as standard as possible. I did want to retain the old weathered look but looks to me it will need at least a paint job. photos to come later

    pics as promised

finally made it in the end, what a drama.
no tow ball to be found anywhere at petrol stations and all mine are different balls for the hitch (DO35) etc. finally one bunnings store sold me a towball late friday evening with supercheapauto and likes were all closed. left at 5am went straight towards Bathurst. Matt the owner can be contacted on 0407 104 713 (have his permission to disclose) who has an amazing collection of LR incl 11x series 2/2a and 3x series 3 for sale, has lost some interest in LR. property in Bathurst region where i picked up my S1. he has sold off his S1 collection as mine was the last one though there are some on his property waiting pick up. mine is the far left in last photo plus all parts on ground. buggerd but got all the bits home now to sort them out. got spare firewall, heaps of doors and spare guards. mine has holden 186 engine. cheers

    Resting for now

now to identify which year, previous owner said its a 54 model, cant open the door as yet to see the internal firewall plate, chassis number have not been able to locate as yet. i believe its in the front spring section will have another look in the morning. D4 did well though the trailer seemed to have sticky brakes i think, it was a hire trailer. weight distribution i always thought needed to be evenly weighted between axles of the trailer however the trailer owner seemed to think 60% weight up front. there was no swaying but a pull push sensation as if at times something was holding the trailer back and other times free to run. anyway managed in the end. enjoy

The draw bar looks to be sloping upward when it should be level; perhaps that was the problem,

    thanks

thanks chazza - now having a look at the pic i tend to agree, when we tied the S1 up it was not on level ground so hard to judge the levels and then once tied up which took a while was not going to untie to re do. the other thing i noticed when i returned the trailer was it had a moving shock type goose neck with a flick lock i had driven unlocked so maybe the shock was old and not dampening.

day 1 - clearing out all the parts which have included 3 bonnets, 10 i think doors, 2 spare tyres/rims, 1 additional seat base, 2x mudguards and front grille/headlight surround.

pic 1 - spare front end
pic 2 - don't think this is standard dual fuel tanks, if not will remove the additional tank? can someone confirm
pic 3 - don't this is standard either, no hole in the rear chassis crossmember? someone confirm please. i think i have a spare though, needs doing
pic 4 - this is what happens when a holden 186 installed though never seen it this bad before though i have a spare one to fit which came with the vehicle though more work.

finally cannot locate a chassis number on either side rear above shackle plate. no plate attached to firewall. help please.

That's the override trailer brakes, flick the lock over when reversing the trailer.

86" therefore '54 to '56. You're correct re fueltank as it should only have the one on the drivers side. And yes it should have the PTO hole in the rear crossmember.

Extra fuel tank is not uncommon, and may have been dealer installed.

Crossmember is definitely wrong, possibly a lwb station wagon one, although these are rare enough to make this unlikely - but could have been cut from one sixty years ago.

Chassis number may not be visible until the area is heavily wirebrushed. It is also possible that it is an import, in which case look on the outside of the chassis in front of the RH front wheel - or in several other locations!

    more pics

pic 1 - something wrong here, the hardtop does not fit well with the front screen, this is a 86inch wheelbase i measured today, but could this be a longer hardtop or has the w/screen rotated to far back. please help, the rear of the hardtop sits nice and plum

pic 2 - d/side rear cross member seems so original, i know its the wrong cross member but has made me take another look, only bit non original is the two large bolts on main frame perhaps holding the cross member in place

pic 3 - same pic but p/side again two large bolts on mainframe non original, but the square tubing used for the cross member again looks original

pic 4 - rear cross member from rear view apart from the hole seems all original, what do you think needs to be cut out and replaced. help

That hardtop, in relation to the windscreen frame looks about right. On the inside, is the hardtop bolted to the windscreen frame or just sitting there? Do the doors close?.W.
