    Stalling when moving off

    Hi ,

truck starts fine and idles fine, but when i move off it dies.

I can do the above with the air filter removed and it starts , idles fine and moves off no prob.

so my question is why does removing the air filter make a difference? I am assuming that its letting more air get in the mix - but how do i fix this and keep the air cleaner on? Is it clean the carby time or something else?
All comments gratefully received as usual.
    cheers,
    D

Probably the top cover of the carby isn't sealing to the body properly.

THanks Bee Utey - so am i sucking in air here or losing gas? And by removing the air filter does that make the air enter more at the top and so not so much at the join? Trying to understand it.
    cheers,

I see you have a Holden carby , check the screws holding the main body to the base section . If they are or have been loose the gaskets each side of the spacer there could be blown. This is a common problem with Holden carby's.

Best way to find vacuum leak is to use a spray bottle with water & spray it around the carby you will here the water being sucked in .

The reason it would go OK with the air cleaner disconnected is the air cleaner is fixed to the body & the motor probably moves side ways when you are moving from a stand still & the hose will pull on the carby & open the gap up between the body & base.

Gave it a good squirt with water this arvo and noticed nothing. I should add , the air filter isnt the oil bath job but a foam oiled element. The screws are all nice and tight and i can not see/ hear any flexing of joints when i pushed and pulled on it. Time to look inside the carby I think.

Just in case anyone is interested - it was nothing to do with the air filter , that was a red herring. I discovered i have an odd looking “hand throttle” which i thought was the choke - plus the choke itself. So the choke knob was missing - and the hand throttle knob was marked “hood” . Should have given me cause to look closer! So i was starting it off with the throttle open and then closing it and attempting to move off and the thing just hadnt warmed up enough. Well , you live and learn.
