Does anyone have an original seat base from a Series I 86" they could take some pictures of ?
My Series I currently has plywood seat bases, the backs are original but the bases have been replaced at some point in it's life.
I have a drawing I found on the internet some years back which gives me the basic dimensions but it would be good to see how it was jointed. Also was it hessian tape stretched (& woven) across the frame ? Stapled to the timber or, more probably, tacked ?
I'm sure the article I found mentioned oak as the timber used.
Exmoor show some pictures but the bases are inner-sprung with a metal surround.

I thought the seat bases were plywood with the vinyl stapled down and the foam glued to the plywood.
Certainly my 56 series I had in 1977 had that and the two series 1s I have now have plywood bases. The seat backs are metal.

The drawing I found was for an 88" Series I seat frame.
Exmoor list them as Ash frames Series I- 86" Full Seat Sets - Original Styles - Front Seating - Series I - 86” & 88" 1954 to 1958 - Series I - Shop by Model | Exmoor Trim
Maybe plywood used in Australia ? If so mine might be the original bases ?

It is very likely that this sort of detail varied over the years the 86 was built and also differed between Solihull and Sydney. In other words, there is almost certainly more than one 'correct' design!

Hi Gromit
I've got a seat base here out of my 55 model 86 and here are the pics.
It is solid wood on this one and looks a bit like what they used to make fruit boxes out of.
47 mm wide x 12.5 mm on the two main runners 31 mm wide x 12.5 on the cross pieces. the cross pieces are chiseled out by 2.5 mm allowing a better joint. I would say they used glue and then believe it or not staples under the Dunlopillow. There is no sign of any hessian but this could have rotted away. Mine had two rubber stoppers screwed to the front and the leather stap pretty much as it was in the Exmoor one.

Many thanks Paul, that helps a lot.
Yours looks very much like the drawing I found. I'm sure there must have been some webbing or hessian strips across otherwise the Dunlopillow base would sag down through the frame. The Exmoor ones have a hessian cover on the base but I wonder what's underneath ?
I've made the front wooden blocks and the leather retaining straps just need to get some suitable hardwood and take it down to my local woodwork club.....
Thanks again,
Colin
