2a gearbox same as series 1

I have a low km 2a gearbox still on a wreck, I been told it is a good box, would it be a straight swap with a series one?

Probably not. While the box itself is fully interchangeable, two different bellhousing to engine patterns were used, one for the Series 1 and six cylinder Series 2a/3, the other for all four cylinder Series 2,2a,3 plus Series 1 diesel. (Not directly relevant to the question, but for completeness the clutch operation arrangement was changed for Series 3 and a few very late 2a home market wagons)

So there is only a small overlap to allow a direct swap. Bell housings however can be swapped, but only between some gearboxes - the size of the layshaft I think changed during S2a production.

Apart from the bellhousing, everything else just bolts in, and while gear ratios changed over the years, the high range in the transfer case remained the same, and first gear and low range changes were matched to give the same overall maximum reduction.

    Hope this helps

Thanks. I'll give it a miss and stick with rebuilding original.

When I had my S1 1958 model I did the change from a side valve /overhead valve motor to a S2 motor. The gearbox required a change of bell housing. Also the S1 gearbox has a small bearing on the input shaft, so it was hard to get the part from a wreckers at the time. Later model S2 had a bigger input shaft bearing.
