I did read that CKD assemblers (Regent Motors, Grenville Motors etc.) stamped the chassis numbers in different locations.

I met an elderly gent a few years back who worked at Regent Motors and the chassis came in a separate parts which they welded together to keep the costs down (and therefore the duty paid). This would probably mean that the chassis number wasn't on the chassis rail when delivered.

I have some number & letter stamps you can borrow

In Colin's photo you can see a brake pipe on top of the LH chassis rail (RHS of photo) behind the radiator panel. My chassis number is directly under the bend in that pipe.

    Hi All,

Well - I have found what I believe is the chassis number... Located (as some have suggested) on the top of the chassis rail, passenger side, where the brake line bends.

Only problem now is - I can't read it!

Interestingly - I would suggest that the original colour of the chassis is yellow, then painted green, then black?

    Cheers,
    GG.

The yellow I believe is an undercoat. Mine was yellow underneath the Sand (beige) final colour.

That yellow looks like the colour of vehicles delivered to the Department of Supply at that time for a variety of government bodies such as Bureau of Mineral resources, Department of Civil Aviation, Overseas Telecommunication Commission etc.

My 86" started life in SA (or Commonwealth) government. The engine sump plate and fuel tank tank guards are the same as used at Woomera. Mine was almost certainly painted Sand from the factory as all of the hard to get to places are the sand colour.

Thanks guys - your eyesight is much better than mine..

The most I got was ...664515 (or 6)

Thanks for your help! The vehicle originated from SA so perhaps it's kissing cousins with Chris's!!

Mine has the yellow primer under the green paint on the chassis.
Yours must have then been painted black at some point in it's life.

I've been told that mine shouldn't have a green chassis but I guess the colour came down to Regent Motors ( or whoever built the CKD locally) rather than Land Rover......
