Forgive me if I’ve missed something but what makes you think rego was nsw by the 3 letter 3 number combo? was used pretty much everywhere by the 50s.
After almost 10 years of ownership, I’ve decided to remove the horrible paint that had been applied to my S1 a few decades ago. On the front mudguard I’ve noticed the faintest impression of hand painted signage. I can just make out the word ‘Ringwood’ which I am guessing was the farm/ station that it was originally employed upon. There is a very faint reference to load capacity a bit below. The owners initial and incomplete name is above.
I happen to have the original Rego number which has the 3 letters then numbers, so I guess this was a NSW Rego. I did, however, acquire the landie from around Bundaberg in Qld.
I was thinking of doing some investigation and if I can find some reference material, maybe try to replicate the signage.
Has anyone got similar hand written signage on there front guard? Pics would be appreciated.

1st July 1955 Qld stoped using Q plates & went to 3 letters with 3 numbers The 1st was NAA 000
Could have been Vic Rego too with that combo - and Ringwood is a ‘burb of Melbourne so could have been shipped North many years after the original ownership.

In the 1950s all states agreed to a unified registration number scheme as ABC-123. NSW started with A (but heavy trucks were F), Victoria with G, Qld with N, can't remember the rest, but Commonwealth vehicles were Z.
They were implemented at different dates in different states, but my family (in NSW) had one of the new numbers in 1953, still an 'A', but not right at the start of the alphabet.
In NSW all commercial vehicles, including all Landrovers, were required to be labelled with the name and address of the owner and the vehicle's tare weight. I think this requirement ended about 1960, so would have applied to all NSW registered Series 1 and some Series 2. There was a minimum size of the writing, and it had to be on the RH side.

I quite like the idea of a sign written personal label on the guard. I think that I’ll have one made up when I repaint the old boy. What was the tare weight for an 86 in S1? And dare I ask, what would be the period correct unit measure?

The weight will depend on the body type and equipment!
Correct units would be tons (T), hundredweight(cwt) and quarters(q). (look them up!)
28 pounds to a quarter, four quarters to a hundredweight, and 20 hundredweight to the ton.
