    Gasket making time

Just cleaned and painted the 2.0 engine and after replacing all fluids was happy that no oil was on the floor, but next morning there was a little green puddle..... bugger !
When I bolted the water pump back on to the block I had no gasket so used ATV silicon. Now I’m about to pull the pump off.
Question: should I make a new gasket out of 2mm cork or gasket cardboard??
Whichever one I was planning on running a skim of silastic across the mating surfaces anyway.
    Is this a reasonable plan?

the series I block water pump is a bit of a tease to seal up.

2mm gasket card and hylomar #3 or stag.

if you hylomar it let the card soak some up first on both sides and paint the block and the pump.

if you stag it paint both sides but dont let the card soak up too much. and work quickly.

What is this opening at the base of the pump? This is where the leak is coming from.

That is to allow the water that leaks through the seal to get out rather than to get into the bearings. It means your problem is the seal not the gasket. The seal could be leaking either through the rubber body of the seal, where it is pressed into the pump body, or the actual sealing surface.

That will be the shaft seal. The hole is to let the water out before it finds the bearing.
Don't rush into replacing the seal yet, it may re seal itself after the engine runs for a while.
Or if the seal rubber has been exposed to the air for a while it may have perished.
Good luck. I don't know where to buy S1 pump seals now days.

Thanks Terry, it didn’t leak before I took the engine out, so maybe once immersed in fluid again hopefully it will swell to seal.
I’ll reconnect all pipes and see how it is after the car is running once more.

What also happens were the carbon seal runs on the impella will get corrosion pits if you leave the pump dry for a few weeks . If you do manage to find a seal you have to get the impella off the bearing shaft with out braking the impella. You will need to machine or sand the sealing serface of the impella & what you tak tree off this serface you will need to remove the same amount off the impella bladesor they will rub on the pump body to get the correct load on the seal.
