    Chassis number 18395

Can anyone offer year model For chassis 18395? And has anyone an idea what “ brake loose” stamped on both sides near front spring hanger means?

That is not a recognised chassis number - you need to recheck it.

    From Calvin www.clifton.nl/calvin.html

    18395

You have entered a code that is not recognizable as a serial number, chassis number, or VIN code for a Land Rover.
Please check that you really typed in all the characters of the numbers, paying attention to, e.g., a leading R or L for serial numbers for Series I, or the appending A, B, C, ..., H for Series II and Series III, or the general SAL code for the new international VIN codes.
In case you did not make a typing error, would you please be so kind as to provide me with details, so that I can enlarge the information set of CalVIN?

There could also be a nother stamped beside the chassis no mine has 4 digits which is 1/2 the height of the chassis no which I always thought was a stock no.

That number looks like it might be stamped over another but may just be corrosion.

    S1 Vehicle numbers

Hello pzs, if your S1 is an 86" it is model year 1954 up to about 1957, when the 88" became available. According to a couple of LR Owner's Instruction Manuals we have numbers (for 1957 MY) begining with: RHD Export: 57160001, 57170000, 176600001, RHD CKD: 57660001, 177600001.
    If it's a 1954 MY vehicle, its number could start with any of the following: 47100001, 47200001, 47130001, 47230001, 47160001, 47260001, 47630001, 47730001, 47660001, 47760001.
The manual for '54 vehicles doesn't distinguish between RHD, LHD, Home/Export/CKD etc.
I quote from the '54 MY manual: "VEHICLE SERIAL NUMBERS.
"The vehicle serial number, comprising eight digits, will be found on the transfer box instruction plate on the dash panel over the gearbox cover. It is the same as the chassis number, which is stamped on the left-hand rear spring shackle bracket" (my italics). Since you have stripped down to a bare chassis, that might be the easier place to confirm your number. In LR talk, Left-hand side refers to when the vehicle is viewed from the rear.
Another clue: if the original 2-litre Rover engine is still fitted, have a look for its serial number. Its year of manufacture can be determined by the early digits. Trust this helps.
    Cheers Rob S
