What is the best Alternator for out vehicles?

I never had an issue with the Imp, Stiletto or Mini (that's why I couldn't remember if they used a dynamo or alternator) so dynamo's were OK for road use back in the day.
I understand why a vehicle used seriously off-road might be more of an issue.

When I arrived at work earlier there was a 'Dynamator' on the 'goods in' bench, must be for the owner's Cooper S......

I think the iissue with the Lucas ones is dust, which is everpresent over much of Australia. Not so much an issue when you had 1,000mile service intervals that included oiling the end bus though. I drove a Citroen with a generator for twenty years without issues, but that was not Lucas.

When I bought our '49 Dodge the only parts missing on this vehicle that had sat neglected with a seized engine for the previous 30 years were the Generator and bracket , and a door window runner.

It had been converted to 12V by a previous owner so the regulator was also missing. It was a no brainer for me to install an Alternator , I looked on eBay for an alternator with similar looks to the old 'Email' Alternator (yes that was the brand) on my old slant 6 Valiant , A $100 Nissan GU alternator won, TBH not one person in the Dodge groups have pointed out that I have an alternator on an otherwise unmolested vehicle.

Apart from originality an Alternator is better in every aspect that a generator .

First alternators on passenger cars in Oz were on RV Valiants, 1962. Holden EH parts book showed an alternator but this was in preparation for them. They were never fitted at factory on EH. Caused arguments with scrutineers in Showroom Stock racing class mid 60's.
