    Help with Exhaust valve removal

HI all you wonderful Land Rover experts.
I have Series 1, 2 litre Spread motor and for the life of me I cannot work out how to remove the exhaust values from the block using the valve compressor I have.

The manual states "Set each Rocker on the back of its cam and use valve compressor.... " What is unclear to me is what needs to come off to allow the compressor to compress the string, and exactly what " Set the Rocker on the back of its cam" actually means. Ate they meaning to rotate the crank until each rocker is at its maximum clearance or something else entirely?

I now the little grey cells as getting a bit old, but I am struggling to understand what these instructions actually mean.

    Can anyone help?
    regards and thanks
    Jeff

you need to set each valve individually prior to removing by making sure the lobe is 180 away from the follower of the valve.

Make sure the cam isn't operating the valve or, as you mentioned, get the rocker to maximum clearance.

I used a motorcycle type valve spring compressor on a 6-cylinder motor which is similar to your 2 litre motor. It has a forked end that straddles the rocker.

Made a longer reach one to do the inlet valves on the 6-cylinder head and have since found a monster sized one at a trash & treasure market.

That looks like it could handle Old Farang's Marine engines. Needs a touch of Cold Galv to protect it from Saltwater though.

It got a coat of hammer finish.....
Picture below shows it with a few other valve spring compressors used for various bikes, cars etc over the years.

The big one was $4 at a trash & treasure a year or so ago, I love the rack & pinion mechanism.

    Thanks for the inspiration, Colin.
I modified a wood-working clamp I had to get around the rocker, as yours did and after that it was simple.
Out they came with bearly any fush at all.

I'll clean them up this afternoon.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time out of their day to help.

    regards and best wishes
    Jeff
