    Lock Down rebuild 86"

OK can’t go fishing in the Rio-Murray or camping so time to restore some thing. Have a 1954 86” in the collection of projects so it’s the one. First like all good reality TV shows I will set a ridiculous schedule and the result of not meeting it will be unthinkable.
To be finished and driven to South Australian Registry Melrose event Easter 2021 If Victorians are every allowed back in that state. Then sold as I already have a 86” in my collection.
Will post progress shots every working day, got to have some communication with the outside world. (That’s outside Victoria).
Landy details 1954 86” 47660089 Siamese- bore purchased as a started project thus it has been stripped down have 85% of the bits I think and all numbers look to be matching. Will probable fit a Ute cab.
Have only 1 photo of the unstriped car attached.
For today’s job rebuild a carbie from stock with right date stamp as the current one is off a Holden.
Before and after photos of the 1954 Carburettor, bead blast, new kit and diaphragms plus build up throttle shaft and turn to size.

    Today's jobs

If anyone is wondering about my order of restoration, it is based on what comes out of the container first.
For today 1st water pump new bearing, seal and impeller. 2nd Lucas C39 generator stamped 54 replaced rear bush, brush set and front bearing polarize to pos earth just in case someone changed it.
Last the distributor new bushes, condenser, points and replace the rubber diaphragm in the vac advance unit as this was stuffed as normal.
Looks like the rear axle assembly for tomorrow might take more than 1 day.

    Today's jobs

Slow going today, pressure clean engine and gearbox, separate and mount engine.
Now I need to decide which to strip down first and find where the nastiest surprises live.

Engine won the toss, so it is first until I need parts.
Rebuild starter motor bushes, brushes, clean up and test.
Removed the head things look OK little moister in number 1 but no real damage intake manifold is a bit rough.

Ok, have stripped down the engine and sorted what parts I will need. Parts ordered.
Time to go fishing for a week or two so no progress post for a bit. ( now that we can)

Progress hold up to rebuild 2L Spread Bore

Placed my restoration on hold to finish a rebuild of a friend’s 2L 1957 Spread bore.
All the normal Rings, bearings regrind crank shaft and head grind (cared out by local engineering company) Valve grind, rebuild generator and starter motor, kit in carburettor, timing gears and chain.
You may notice the rear sacrificial anode had to be honed out and a core plug installed due to the previous fitting of a steel plug that had rusted and destroyed the thread.

    Back to work

Back to work on my 2L, most parts have turned up. Head visited engineering workshop for a touch up and crankshaft ground to suit new bearings 15Th main and 30th big end.
Install pistons with new ring set and little end bushes, fit crankshaft and torque everything down. Have ground valves and seats and fitted head. Sump cleaned up and a bit of panel beating then fitted.
1 x 1 1/8” Welch plug, 3 x 1 15/16” core plugs and 2 x 1’’ Alu sacrificial anodes fitted to block up some holes. Working primer switch in non-corroded mount bolted to rear of head.
Install water pump and thermostat housing with new thermostat, engine mounts and exhaust manifold.
Next will require a bit of welding on my best intake manifold and sort out an oil filter. Then I can swap mounts to set up the timing.

    Big time out.

After a long delay doing other things back to the project.
Moved to the run up stand, fly wheel and new clutch installed, valve timing and new timing gears and chain installed.
Three days spent converting bypass oil filter canister to accept spin on filter and new copper pipes, may have been simpler to purchase ready-made.
