    Core plugs early 2ltr ( 52, 80")

    Hiyas all

Realised that I have a couple of holes in block that the engine cleaner removed or dissolved and at the moment I cannot fill. Each is either side of first and last exhaust port and into the water jacket. Threads are not good.

Have estimated that they are either 5/8 or 3/4 BSP 14 TPI. Most likely 5/8 BSP. Will need to find an old mate plumber or a young bloke who has inherited taps and dies. Can turn up brass core plugs at either 5/8 or 3/4 but cleaning out block thread ???? Mmmmm!

So? Anyone know where I can get core plugs in Aus, and are they 3/4 or 5/8 BSP?

Hi, they are British conduit thread so a electrician (old) has more chance then plumber 16 treads to the inch, hard to find and pretty pricey.
You can get thread files with 16 to the inch easily and with a bit of effort sometimes this works.
The plugs are a sacrificial anode and are made from an alloy material. if the treads are very bad and can’t be repaired I have honed them and press fit a core plug with success.

IMAG0995.jpg IMAG0997.jpg IMAG0993 (1).jpg This is what my 80" has & I have seen a lot with this modification . It has been taped to take plumbing plug . The rear one needs to be ground down to clear the Exhaust manifold &you need to make sure it is flush with the side of the block or this will happen.
And Dennis1 is correct it is a conduit thread. I had some alum plugs but have just last week given to some one else that needed

On the left is the correct bung with 16 TPI, on the right the small bung off a 44-gal. drum, 14TPI, as used on this 1600 engine. Anything to keep going I guess

Thank you all. Very informative. Good Oil perhaps????

Will check up on that tap and where it is in respect to moi :0)

Alex@Series 1 has provided me with the correct aluminium plugs. Mmmmmm? With modern glycol coolants, corrosion inhibitor the aluminium is probably superfluous........................BUT?

    Cheers

    Plugs

hiyas all, 'nother tip. S1 good oil??

Did say Alex at Series 1 provided appropriate plugs. Unfortunately not. Mine ended up being 1" dia and 22tpi. Thinks they are all 22tpi.

Anyway managed to get correct size from UK, and quickly. Umm! problem came when trying to fit. Cleaning the threads in the block without an original tap. Full of corrosion product (impervious to the acid baths). Did try all sorts, lathe tools, using 22tpi BSF tap as a chaser and on and on. All to no real avail.

Brainstorm, light bulb moment! Dremel Dremel with small cutting wheel and worked in the threads very gently. Crap came out quite easily. Takes time and the ability to be able to rotate block so one can see thread. Over time I was able to get the plugs in to full depth of block thread. Around 1/4 to 5/16 inch.

Now in, cut off, bottomed out and 3Bond red RTV sealed.
