    S1 57 petrol

    Hello,
    Hope all is well.
Long time no post due to ill health. Currently on the mend.

Went to fire up the S1 today to bring some wood up , started ok but kept sounding like it was going to die under acceleration. Last time it sounded/behaved like that , it had a critters nest in the air filter. Air filter ok. Battery was very low, currently charging, but started ok and idled ok.Voltage regulator is a bit iffy from time to time, but that tends to manifest itself in a low battery. Fuel pump ok so Im thinking carby?

I’ll have a fiddle with it tomorrow, but was just on the look out for any ideas as to what it may be.
All comments gratefully appreciated as always.
    cheers, D.

How old is the fuel in it , Unleaded goes off much quicker than leaded fuel did. I find with my 80" with fresh fuel it will start & run beautifully but once the fuel gets to about a month old I need to use the choke a lot longer & dose not run as smooth.

That’s a thought, months old I’d say. There was already a bit in the tank and I topped it up with some from a can , but that would be at least a couple of months old in itself. Worked ok a week back . It doesn’t get much use. If I don’t have any luck with it today , i’ll rig Up a fresh can and test the theory.
    cheers,

I did the high revs hand over the top of the carby trick and it’s now running fine. I guess I need to do a carby clean and rebuild kit. I’ll see how much sending it off will cost and do a compare between the prices. Will have to wait as Chumlees the only runner I have at the moment and I need him for the wood pile. Don’t think the generators in too good nick either, or the voltage regulator.
    cheers,

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be a hair in the pilot jet. If it is running OK now, it probably won't need a carbie overhaul. If it has been a long time since the carb was done, maybe your fuel pump/economy diaphragms are a fit stiff and old. Also, taking the slack out of the accelerator pump linkages and setting it up as per the Workshop Manual can make ahuge difference to overall performance. A bit of Flashlube in the fuel also seems to help. I use STD 91 Octane fuel with Flashlube and it seems to stay fresh for months. 5380

Dirt in the carby I think. When my eyes got home from work , she pointed out the fuel filter was rank. I need a new glasses prescription , but have had some work done on my eyes and have to wait for things to settle down.
    Thanks for the tips.
    cheers,
