Installing rubber seal between Water Pump and Thermostat housing

    HI Gentlemen,
Are there any trade secrets or tricks to installing the rubber seal and copper tube between the Water Pump and the Thermostat housing?
I'm working on a 2 litre spread bore motor and Im using brand new Water Pump, Thermostat housing, rubber seal and copper tube.
I've installed it with care, twice now and it keeps leaking. Not a huge leak, but about a drop every two seconds, so enough to stop me running the motor up to temperature and moving forward with the rebuild.

Is there a specific or correct order of assembly?

I installed the lower thermostat housing first, but not the thermostat or cover. I then offered-up the water pump, with the seal and tube sitting in their recess on the top of the water Pump. While doing this this, I uses a screw driver lowered down through the top of the thermostat housing to try to hold/ guide the rubber seal and tube into place, while sliding the water pump into place under the Thermostat housing.
The entire procedure seems pretty imprecise, as its impossible to see if the seal and tube are correctly in place as the two prices are slid into place.

Clearly I am not doing this correctly, as on both occasions, it leaked.
I am going to have a third go this afternoon, so would hugely appreciate any guidance or advice on how to get a water tight seal.

    regards
    Jeff in Perth, Western Australia.

I have never had a problem but always put a thin smear of silicon on the seal , You don't want too much you don't want it blocking the hole as this is a bypass encase the thermostat dose not open . I wonder if the seal is the correct thickness , a lot of things these days with metric are not the exact size as the original which are imperial. The seal should be thicker than the gap between the two components so it get's squashed . I may still have a couple of NOS ones here still if you are stuck , will check later & let you know.

    Thanks for respond 1950Landy,
I purchased the seal from a reputable UK supplier, so I can only hope it is correct. I might still have the old one around somewhere.

My larger concern is if I have the assembly in the right order. I fitting the thermostat housing first, then tried to squeeze the seal into its location as I lifted the water pump up into position.
I am now wondering if it would be better the other way around.

That is, to mount the Water Pump, and once that is fully bolted up put the seal and tube into its cavity on the water Pump and them lower the Thermostat housing down onto the seal and tube and then bolt up the Housing.

    Any thoughts?

I have always fitted the water pump first then fitted seal into the grove then the thermostat housing.

Thanks 1950 Land, that is what I did and it seems to have worked much better that way around.

I had a problem fitting the thermo housing to the water pump too. The cause was not using the correct rubber O-ring around the brass piece that sits on top of the water pump. The proper O-ring is a tad chubby which compresses with the weight of the bottom thermo housing. I also smeared a bit is general purpose silicon, then put a screw driver through the hole in the bottom of the bottom thermo housing and into the water pump to stop the O-ring moving as I tightened the four bolts. The pushed down, and tightened the four bolts that secure the bottom thermo housing to the head, fitted the thermostat and top housing, and topped up the water etc.
