    Ignition Switch Problem

Would appreciate someone's guidance. I have a 1956' SWB S1 with a 2L petrol. When I turn the ignition switch, I can hear fast clicking noise. Normally, the clicking is slow. Engine starts ok. Have checked battery terminals, solenoid terminals, removed dash and checked to see if any of the screws are loose holding wires to terminals on the switch. If I start the engine, it runs smoothly for about 5 mins, and then stops. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Cheers, John

Does it have an original fuel pump or has someone fitted a Facet type electric pump ?
Mine ticks like crazy when it's been standing for ages as it fills the float bowl & builds pressure. After that you can't hear the ticking over the engine noise.

    Fuel Pump

Thanks. Mine has both. I'll switch to use the contemporary pump in the morning and see if this resolves the problem. I hadn't thought that the ticking was from the fuel pump. Thanks for pointing this out. Kind regards, John

    Fuel pump

Still no joy. Either pump ticks fast as soon as the key is turned.

Means the pump is trying to build pressure but it's not happening.
Air leak in a fuel line, blocked filter, empty tank......

    No fuel. Duh!

    Hi Colin,

You are correct. Faulty fuel gauge. After doing a search, I learn I either had no fuel or an air leak. Embarrassingly, it was the simplest of solutions - no fuel. Runs perfectly now! I almost wish it was something technical - rather than operator error.

Now for the fuel gauge - I'll check the sender and wiring etc. Last time, I found the little box on the top of the sender needed to be cleaned.

Thanks for your guidance. Much appreciated. John

    Hello John,
If you're cleaning the rheostat at the top of the sender unit, get a multimeter and check that the variable resistor gives a smooth range of readings (Ohms) from empty to full. Also check the strainer at the bottom of the pickup pipe. It should not restrict fuel flow to the pump.
    Cheers, Rob S
