    Steering Wheel Removal - help!

    Hi All,

Last night I decided to remove the steering wheel from my 1955 S1. According to my S1 Workshop manual - it's exactly the same set-up as the S2's that I have worked on... I've removed steering wheels from 2 x Series II's without issue - this Series 1 has me stumped, as it is COMPLETELY different...

First step is easy - remove the nut/bolt that holds the steering wheel onto the steering column:

Then it gets interesting - on my S2, the plate for the steering wheel is metal (which jagged edges on the side that hold it in place).

The plate for this steering wheel is baker light?

I worked out that I had to push the steering wheel down - to compress the spring on the steering column and lock it in place.

Then using my fingers I was able to remove 3 x nuts, that hold the baker light plate onto a triangular bracket.

You can see in this last pic - that 2 of the nuts are glued to the back of the baker light, and the 3rd nut has broken off - it will be a simple enough fix to glue it back on again.

Next phase is to remove the horn button, which sits on top of the triangular bracket:

Now this last bit has got me confused.

When you turn the steering wheel - this round plate stays STATIONAIRY. This suggests to me that it is somehow connected to the steering column.

The steering wheel cannot be removed, without removing this circular bracket (the triangular bracket connects to this, creating a gap for the horn button)

Using my fingers - I cannot feel anything behind this circular plate.

Using a pair of pliers, I could put them into 2 of the holes and turn this circular bracket around 360 o... I turned it 10 rotations one way, and 10 the other.. Yes it moves, but it is not unscrewing.

Using my fingers I cannot pull this bracket off - it won't budge.

I cannot use a screw driver to lever it up - as this will damage the steering wheel.

I thought about using a puller - but that won't work because (a) I don't have a puller small enough, and (b) the puller would simply pull against itself.

I am mulling around the idea of making a bracket, that connects onto this circular bracket via the 3 holes - and then I try and pull my bracket away - basically a home made puller.

But I'm not having any luck.

I feel like I am missing something basic here...

    1) Is this a S1 steering wheel? (According to my S1 Workshop manual - it certainly isn't)
(Perhaps it's a steering wheel from an old Rover car?)

    2) How do I get this circular bracket off - so that I can remove the steering wheel.

    3) It's going to be very difficult putting this thing back together.

Here is why I want to remove the steering wheel - it's needs some love:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    GG.

Loosen this clamp at the bottom of the steering box , disconnect the wires at the J-box, pull the Bakelite switch/horn out, complete with tube.
On a hardtop there may not be enough room and you may have to remove the roof.

This is probably not relevant any more, but used to be when Series One L/Rs were still being used for work.
When you leave a S1 L/R with Bakelite steering wheel centre out in the rain without a top, the steering wheel centre can fill up with water. When you drive off, or drive down a slope
the water sloshes around and drains down the steering tube into the steering box. I guess the felt bush P/n 08832 is supposed to stop that from happening.

Hello, and thanks to all for this thread. We had been trying to figure out how to remove steering wheel for a few days.

Still holds true! Steering is frozen, I'm guessing from water entering wheel and making its way down column. A seal busted that holds the gear lube, that felt bush looks like just the ticket! TY!

The amount of sludge was... putrid. Shotgun cleaning kit with (I think) 16 gauge tip helped clear out the sludge.

I wish I had known about this before I tried to remove my steering wheel.
