In the last 3oyears I have only managed to contact the Series one Shop & couple of times I managed he sent me a reply that had no relation to what I asked him. Found it quicker to go O/S back then before all this crazy with Covid.
Hi fellows,
I'm new to your forum but have owned Series Land Rovers of one sort or another for over forty years. I have a Discovery tdi 2 as my daily driver but my 1955 S1 86" does all the hard work on our farm near Braidwood NSW.
I've been going through the car bit by bit for the last few years improving things and it's now very good, but the steering has become progressively worse and it is time to strip it down.
I find I need a pair of front swivel joint kits and the half shaft bearing, and also a new set of rubber spring bushes. These seem to be available at British Auto Parts but they have decided to close, today as it happens, for a month which means my car is off the road.
The Series One Shop site lists the kit as well but I've had no luck contacting Alex.
Could anyone suggest another source in Australia who might sell the swivel kits?
Thanks!
Antony

I've had success with All four x 4, but that is for 2a parts. Worth giving them a try though.

Try Karcraft at Silverwater. Their website mentions S1 parts. I've found them to be very good in my past dealings with them

possibly same swivel hubs as series 2 , which are different to later 2A and series 3 .
The steering arms are on the top of the swivel ( I think ) versus steering arms on the bottom of the swivel.

That change was during 2a production, and many earlier ones have been converted. Parts for the older setup are a bit hard to find.

Anthony,
I had similar issues myself. All the cones and pins I saw seemed loose in the splines and it all seemed a bit of a crude set up to me. In the end I ended up replacing the worn top swivel cones, springs and splined pins with the same tapered roller berarings (std bearing from local suplier) and plain pins as fitted to the bottom swivels. This was what was fitted to the early 80" models. They had issues with wheel shake and changed to the spring loaded cone set up. Most of these issue were due to a combination of the cross ply tyres of the day and spring shackle geometry design compromises on the very early models. With modern properly balanced tyres, accurate wheel alignment, a correctly functioning steering relay and tight rod ends it all works perfectly. Just adjust the preload on the tapered roller swivels as per the first 80" models and keep the swivel housings, relay and steering box topped up with Penrite 80/90 gear oil (Safe with bronze bushes).
I have done a lot of miles since and had no problems at all exceopt when the oil escaped from the relay and the steering needed constant correction.
PM me if you need more info.

I must have been lucky with mine.
Back in 2007 I stripped, cleaned & reassembled the cones. The lower taper rollers were OK.
Seals were replaced and a GL4 EP75W90 used (some GL5 oils can damage yellow metals). Still leak tight and running crossplies it steers OK.
The relay was OK but dropped its contents while in the shed so I removed the bottom seal holder, replaced the seal, refitted and topped it up. One day I'll get round to replacing the top seal as it must be rock hard by now.

Wear on the splines for the spring and cone setup was always the problem. My S1 nearly failed roadworthy for rego renewal on that in 1963!
