    Original engine in my 86 inch?

    I’m interested to know whether my 1955 86 inch has its original engine. Is there a way to determine this, or at least whether the manufacture dates of engine and car are about the same? The chassis number is 57661229 and the engine number 111800298.

    The engine appears to belong to a 58 88"

    Thanks. How are you able to determine that from the engine number?

    Fourth digit = model year 6 = 1956
    7 = 1957
    8 = 1958

    Add your number here.

    From the list at the front of the 1948-58 workshop manual, part no. 4291. The Clifton site only deals with chassis numbers.

    It appears to be a 1958 number as stated previously. The only real difference is that the '55 has 11/16" gudgeon pins and the '58 has the 7/8" pins that were fitted from 1956 models onwards. I learned this when I ordered a set of O/S pistonds for a late '55 engine and the pins were too large for the conrod little ends. Whoops!. Anybody looking for a set of 7/8" pin pistons?
