the vehicle was picked up (bought privately) in england,driven through europe & then shipped to west africa, & based in kumasi.it stayed there until 1966,before being shipped to england for a couple of months,& then shipped to brisbane where it has been since.

have got a few old photos of it in africa,etc,will have to sort them out & post them.....dont want to bore you all;)

i have also found some log books for it

Actually I was quite surprised that the number of weeks is pretty close I had always thought that a car was still quite a luxury in the 50’s .

(Don’t flame me if I’ve stuffed the maths – I aint a statistician or an accountant – just thought it’d would be an interesting comparison!)

Edit - I think I do need an accountant because I just realised I haven't taken out income tax --- doh!

I always reckon it is much more complicated than that.
I argue that to work out how long someone would have to work to buy a car, you don't look at gross income.
You don't even look at after tax income.
You need to look at disposable income.

That is much harder to calculate, but I believe it is the only relevant measure.

Yeah probably not reasonable comparison. No doubt they were expensive for there time. I recall my grandfather saying his first AWA TV cost many hundreds of pounds in the late 50's - about 75% the cost of his new FE holden:eek:

I have a copy here of the receipt for a 1971 2A SWB that was purchased new and the buyer could have opted for a GT Falcon of the day. A standard family sedan was about 2/3 of the price.
Up until recent years when motor vehicles have become so much more affordable a new vehicle was approx twelve months wages for the average tradesman.
I also have an old Barrier Miner (Broken Hill) news paper from the 1950's when wool was 1 Pound a Pound and new Vauxhall Sedans were about eight hundred quid and the utes were a bit dearer.

Cars were more of a luxury then, but I think you will find that at that time the Landrover sold for little more than the Holden car - which was just about the cheapest you could get. Relative to other cars it is now a lot more expensive than it was fifty years ago.

And I think that the proportion of tax paid on an average income may well be less than it was then.
