1954 86" rebuild......

Wrk is progressing well.......

Spent the past few weeks panel beating and the front guard is looking quite smick indeed. My next task is to try and shrink the front drivers guard where the door stopper is after years.

Most importantly while visiting my parents in Pt Pirie yesterday I had the chance to go shopping without the wife and purchased myself new tool including a new orbital sander.

It has probally been asked before whats the best way for putting some shine/bling back in the old galv trim........and yes I will post pictures

Very nice Wayne, very nice indeed! An 86 with the top off and the screen down is a thing of beauty to my eyes, especially with a capstan winch on the front of it. :cool: Wouldn't have a spare you don't need, would you? :angel:

Hi Wayne,

The trick with polishing up old hot dipped Galvanising is to use a Stainless Steel wire brush or SS Wire Rotary wheel on your drill. The trick is not to go too hard as you will push through the coating. I recommend suitable PPE (Dust mask) as the dust I believe is a bit bad.

It came up a treat on my 1951 80", it got 57 years of dust and verdigris off no problems

Many thanks - on the series one fire engine I used a bit of fine wet and dry but will give the SS wire rotary wheel a go.

Well its a 1954 SWB 86"....fitted with rear PTO and front capstan.

Some would see it stange as its not red - but the wife has claimed it as her car and wants to drive it at the the "Land Rover Register" event at Blinman in 2009 (March........I hope it can be done)

Its a reasonably complete vehicle and drivable........I need to stress its not a downs to chasis rebuild but a general tidy up and paint.

Nice looking straight 86" there. Wish mine was that straight to start with.:(
The colour looks the same as mine (see "Meet Len" thread), but mine has a fair bit more aluminium showing through;). Does yours have the extra fuel tank and/or engine sump guards underneath? A piece of angle welded to the rear of the gearbox crossmember that the sump guard bolted to may be the only indication left if they have been removed.

Also, what size wheels and tyres has your 86" got on it? Yours look about the right proportion to the vehicle. I have 7.5/16s which look too big and need replacement any. Are they on 5" or 5.5" rims?

The modifications your mentioning was a common thing done at Wommera Tech Area Workshops - difficult to prove as documentation from old defence arkives almost impossible to obtain.

The wheels on the vehcile are almost as old as me - but they are 600 16's bar treads - but I will be fitting 700 16s as it helps with the gearing

Hi there all

Just preparing to head back to work tomorrow up north (nightshifts)

I need to stress - this rebuild is not to concourse condition as the vehcile is used often around the farm, but generally just a good neat and tidy up ready for rego (The local police surgested this is wise).

I am no expert when it comes to panel beating but prepared to give it a go and generally happy with the progress so far. So any input from forum members would be greatfully eppreciated as it to dont ask/show you will never learn.

Like alot of early land rovers a modification done was to mount a piece of angle steel across the front wing to stabilise then, over time what usually happens is the corrosion between the steel and alloy can be devistating.

To fix the problem I mounted a peice of bent up alloy which I rivetted behind for strength - well have a look at the pictures ...
