2A Headlight/Ignition Switch

Just a quick note about keys here - many years ago I installed a computerised key cutting system for a leading locksmith in a large city.

That thing was awesome. You could punch in a number off a worn key (or the number off a barrel) and it would come up with a possible list of vehicles (or locks) that the number related to. You chose the one selection that matched your key (for example, in this case, Land Rover) and it told you which key blank to insert - and then it proceeded to cut a factory replica of your key. I reproduced all my old worn Series 1 keys on that machine :)

The software was updated frequently with new key codes and I understand now that it even has the cutting details for newer style keys prociding that the cutting machine can handle those keys.

That sounds like a very good quality machine, most of the keys cut around here are done by overpriced Mr Minute type of outfits,and if they don't have the blank it's often "not made anymore, you have to get a new lock,or go to the dealer" but it is often cheaper to go to a locksmith and get it right the first time.

Alvis,Bristol,Standard,AC,Singer,Reliant. M/cycles:Triumph,BSA,Norton,Ariel,AJS,Vincent.
Commercials: Leyland,Guy,AEC,Albion,Karrier,Commer trucks & buses.

And there were probably a lot more, all from a very limited combinations of that key face type and tumbler combos.:)

There've been a number of times when I've open car doors with incorrect keys. Even if they're completely different blanks too!
I've open a honda with a wire screen door key. It only ever did it the once, though. If you ever lock your keys in a car it's worth attempting other keys.

The most embarrassing thing that I have had happen in regards to keys, was when I had a white Mini deluxe sedan as a company car,and I came out of Bankstown Shopping Centre walked up to the car, unlocked it started it up and drove off, at a set of lights about a klm down the road I noticed a funny smell, looked over into the back and spotted a nappy bag and other stuff related to a baby :eek: "THIS WAS NOT MY CAR" so back to Bankstown, and after driving around found mine by rego No, and parked & relocked the other one close by :angel: after that I ALWAYS looked at the Rego No

that is a nice original lucas type switch from another english car/commercial, there are 2 types of switch for the early 2/2a, one that has the little tg on the bottom the other has just a 6 sided seration on it, both have the centre key,I can't remember what year the change was at,is your vehicle a diesel, as I see what looks like a low fuel blue light on the right side of the dash??

Once upon a time I had a camira and a mitsi van as a work car that had the same keys, After I got a new van I gave the old one to a guy who was working with us. One day I saw it at pacific fair on the gold coast and hopped in it and moved it across to the other side of the car park, I never told him it was me but he kept telling the story to anyone who would listen about the time it took him 1/2 an hour to find his car at the shops;)

at my work several of the utes start with anythin that wont bend when you turn it
although these utes have seen much better days
