Question Land Rover 1972 Series 2a SWB Project

HI ALL - I just joined yesterday

My Ex-boyfriend & I purchased a 1972 SWB Series 2a Landrover with a 186... ages ago!! It use to run on the road & off road quite well... So much fun!! Something happened to the gearbox while up the beach - it did get a new
master slave but it hasn't been the same or on the road since.... sitting in my Dads shed!!

Been sitting there for a few years now & I've decided that I am interested in learning about how cars work.. And getting the beast back on the road!! Meant to be pretty basic car to learn on.... & looks mad (I love it)!

Was thinking of reconditioning the motor but didn't know if it would be better to get a 200tdi (but not sure how much this will cost converting to diesel & if it's worth it), changing front brakes to disc, sorting out the gearbox etc

Can anyone give me any advise because I have not a clue... But I am very enthusiastic about learning

    Thanks
    Brenna

    G'day Brenna.

Nice to see you showing some interest in the old beast.

A 200Tdi would be a possibility, but probably easier to find an original 2.25, 4 cylinder and put it back to "real" spec.

Good luck with it and lots of advice should be coming your way soon

hmmm have you still got the plates on it as series III was first introduced in 1971. Therefore it is earlier than 1972 or it is a series III. The easiest way to tell is the headlights and the door hinges...I have a series II and a series III in my signature picture

Gday Home Slice and welcome to the forum.
Hunchy's a great lil spot know it well too.

As Mrs HH said, it's prob a Series 3.
They are a big meccano set and pretty simple to work on.
Get yourself a "Rave" CD from the shop here, it's a full manual on CD.

Keep the 186 it in for now, they go fine, and they're simple. Also simple to restore and plenty of parts available.
A Land Rover motor would be better and more original of course.

As long as the engine is OK, you might be surprised how easy it is to get going again.
Brakes and clutch always needs attention after laying up.
Probably a few new hoses and lines, (if they're rusted/perished) new slave & master cylinders, new fluids and a good bleed are a start.
Check the carby is working / serviceable / looks ok too.
Electrics - aargh....hopefully they're ok, check the coil, rotor button and distributor as a start, when it's time.

There's a wealth of info and people willing to help on here, and stacks of parts and spares available all over Australia.
British Off Road at Chevallum, were fantastic - but they don't do any Series work anymore.

    Enjoy

I will have to double check whether it is a series 2 or 3.... but will the CD be good for either?

Has it got a steel dash with gauges in the middle (2/2A) or a padded dash board with gauges in front of the driver (3) ??
