    Rego'd Series 2/2A guide price

    After a conversation earlier this evening, I'm trying to get some opinions of the base price for a Series 2 or "lights in the grille" 2A SWB with rego.

    Whilst I appreciate that condition, options, rarity etc. all play a part, what would you expect as the minimum selling price of a newly rego'd but original (i.e. un-restored) "ute" bodied 88"? Assume no PTO, no overdrive, just a basic petrol engined vehicle with reasonable bodywork and everything in good enough shape to be rego'd and usable. The kind of vehicle that could be subject to a running restoration if desired, or just kept going with normal maintenance.

    As a second part of the question, would the same vehicle with a Holden motor be worth more or less?

    I would guess a minimum of around $1500, assuming it is actually registered and has a pink slip that is worth the paper it was printed on. I think it would have to be pretty rough to be worth less. This would assume that it has not been extensively modified, and any modifications are approved. (A Holden engine reduces the value, but how much depends on the installation - these vary from "looks factory" to awful.)

    If it has nearly 12 months rego and greenslip, that is worth (from memory) $600+ alone.

    What it is worth for this specific example, is impossible to say. So few of them come on the market that the price of the same vehicle might vary from $1500 to $6000, simply depending on whether there is only one buyer in the market this month or two! There are simply not enough sold to establish a market price.

    If it is something special, such as a 1958 model with the original 2litre engine, it could be worth a lot more, for example. Originality is likely to command a higher price these days, as the 2a becomes more generally regarded as a collectible, and the price will, in general, only go up.

    That's good to know. Living in the country, and having friends who for many years have been doing engineering work on farms (and so know everybody) I keep being offered old Land Rovers. The ones I have collected so far range from needing serious restoration (Series 1) through to probably requiring a weekend's work servicing brakes etc.

    Yesterday a very good friend of mine (actually my steel fabricator) called to tell me he was on a farm doing a job and has found an 88" (I'm guessing Series 2 or 2A) that was a daily driver until 15 years ago when it suffered a failed clutch cylinder and was driven inside a shed to be fixed. The owner bought a Land Cruiser and the LR has been in the shed ever since. My friend (a registered motor mechanic, although he now runs an engineering company) tells me it's in better condition than any of mine, and probably/possibly just needs new tyres for rego......... As always, there are also 4 or 5 other LR's on this property that have been used for spares.

    I do like the SWB Land Rovers, but I'm starting to get over-run by them!

    Neither really. The question stems from a conversation about what price level is too good to walk away from, either as a buyer or seller! That conversation in turn started with a totally complete SWB (mentioned above) that possibly needs little more than a service (and perhaps tyres) to pass rego, that has been in a shed for 15 years and has an asking price of $500. Compared to a LWB 2A with no rego, condition unknown, advertised locally for $2500.....

    Well I got my LWB with 11 months Rego for $2,000. It does have some problem areas but was able to drive back from Mudgee to Manly without any major drama. Chassis, suspension and bulkhead are all in really good condition. Just need to sort the brakes and get the engine running a little smoother. I think the biggest problem with buying Land Rovers over here is finding one that is now on the other side of the country.

    When I was looking for some front springs for my SWB I couldn't find any and ended up buying parabolics. In the last couple of months I've been offered a stack of LR's, including 10 within 10km from my farm - at least 2 sets of the right springs!.

    This morning I've been offered a Series 2A SWB in very good order, a military Series 2 SWB with no gearbox, and another pair of Series 1's (probably good only for parts, one has a 6 cylinder motor!), and a body/chassis of a LWB Series 2.

    At some point I'll have to start either reselling some, or providing a "finder" service for people who want parts!

    Edit: Having just looked up the VIN, the "very good order" SWB appears to be a Series 2, either 1959 or (less likely) 1958 - I'll need a magnifying glass to confirm the year digit buts it's either 9 or possibly 8.
