Just been having a bo-peep at some of your images, what caught my attention was the image of the LHS of the engine block with the stencilled number 537.
That would certainly indicate to me that your early 2 1/4 lt engine was out of a S2 Command/Recon or S2 109ex mil, but it would be a time consuming task to look up the engine numbers to find out 100%, anyway keep at it, it is looking good, cheers Dennis.

Well I got a lot of jobs done over the Easter break and am happy with the progress. There are always many more jobs to do though...
I was very sad :( when the thermostat housing bolts sheared off (there is another thread about it) - and removing them was the biggest highlight of the weekend..

That's it for a while.
The " next to the thermostat housing" item is the mixture temp sensor. It switches the yellow choke light on when the engine reaches operating temp and warns you that the choke is still on and you are wasting fuel!! It probly is non operational now. They do not seem to have a long lifespan. A green? wire attaches to the terminal(Brass nut)

Grey Ghost I notice that you paint the vehicle with the windows in, had you considered removing them and replacing the rubbers.
I recently replaced the rubbers on my series 3 as they had gone hard and perished. As a result they did not hold the glass firmly and it was able to move around in them, so along with that and some grit in there they would make a horrible squeaking noise. I know it's hard to believe that this noise could be heard in a Land Rover along with the one million other noises, but it was irritating. Clark Maples sell the rubber seal and its a reasonably easy job to replace it. The first one is probally the hardest, working out the correct length to cut the rubber so that it doesn't either bunch up or end up with a gap when finnished. Once you have developed a bit of knack it's all over in half an hour. You need an offsider inside the vehicle to assist and a tool made up from a short section (200ml long) of small bar or pipe, with a piece of wire formed into a diamond shape and brazed onto the end of it. The diamond has to be about 6mm inside measurement so as to allow the rubber beading the locks the window rubber in place, to freely pass through it! Some dishwashing concentrate is necessary too.

Thanks for the tips. I did remove the glass from the upper tailgate window - as it was badly perished. I have yet to purchase a replacement rubber - now I know where to get it from!
For some reason the rubbers on this car are in remarkable condition.. They actually look new to me. I should have removed them - even though I masked up the windows, as you can see there are still some small bits of paint on the rubber... You wouldn't have a tip for removing paint from rubber would you? :wasntme:

Because the head size isn't much bigger than the threaded section you may find it difficult to match exactly.

I'll have a if around at work in the box of old senders - there are some VERY old ones in there that I'm sure would have a BA thread. Should be able to ind something to work.:)
Oh, and I'm back in the State now, so I can pop up and help you get the engine on the stand if you haven't got that far yet.
