I think you have deduced correctly. My S1 had two cracked mounts and I had to make a new one - it was caused by being driven for years without the rubbers doing their job, so every bump it hit gave the mountings a thump as well.

If that fabricated mounting is doing its job, why not leave it there? It leaves a bit of history with the car,

As I said, I wasn't going to remove the gearbox - but when I spotted the weird gearbox mount - it just made sense to pull it out..

Do you want a matching pair of gearbox mounts that suit that year Land rover you are working on? you can have the ones of the 'Rusty Bob', PM me if you like.

You would also need to organise a AULRO courier to pick up if you want them.

I started off today cleaning the gearbox today - I had already given it a good clean, but now that it's out I spent more time on it. I didn't take any photo's because I have done so already.

I then cleaned-up the hand-brake backing plate. Before:

I then cleaned-up the mounts attached to the actual gearbox. Before:

Next job was to clean-up the bolts that hold the actual mounts onto the gear-box. Note there was only 1 "tab" on the passenger side gear-box mount.

Should there be either:
a) 1 - only one required on the passenger side.
b) 2 - only one required per side (drivers/passenger)
c) 4 - two required on each side
d) 0 - not require required..

Great work, GG. As for the tabs on the transmission mounts, my IIA doesn't have any. It's been that way for at least the last twenty-three years with no ill effects.

Question: Should I pack the end of the shaft that has the brass ball with grease when I re-assemble? It didn't look like there was any grease on there?

The 'Spherical ball' should have 2 felt rings that support the ball also they are soaked in oil, cheers Dennis:angel:

That spanner has a new purpose, as a gouge ! :D

I have managed to order the "2 felt rings that support the ball" - but the UK supplier is out of stock and is quoting "between 1 week and 6 months"...:eek:

So - would you have a photo of one, so that I could make one temporarily while I await for the real deal to arrive? I have ordered them but I want to continue putting the thing back together and not wait! I was thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to cut up some felt and make some myself, but the parts manual doesn't really show what they look like in any detail.
