What to look for 1958 SII

    Hi all:
I'm looking at a ex mill SII SWB Land Rover 1958. Still has regiment? decals front and rear, but has been repainted lighter colour (leaving decals untouched). Was soft top but hard top now attached.

Any particular engine numbers or chassis details to consider.

My first foray into the older land rover scene. it just looks so proud in its shed on the hill, and has a lot more to give.

One identifying mark of a 1958 is an extra mounting bracket on the L/H side of the Chassis beside the radiator. Only 58s have it. Engine No should start 1418.. and the Chassis 1438...

Assuming it is Australian assembled, the chassis number should be on the spring hanger at the ack of the LH rear spring, facing out. Also on the four wheel drive operation plate on the firewall, but since this is only screwed on, it is not a reliable source of information and may be missing. There should also be military data plates, usually on the LH end of the seat box, but since 1958 was the first Series 2/2a, may be elsewhere.

It is possibly not Australian assembly, in which case the chassis number should be on the outside of the chassis just behind the bumper.

Chassis number can then be put into Calvin Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands to confirm type and date.

1958 is the year that the Series 2 was introduced. In that year most swb Series 2 continued to be fitted with the 2 litre engine from the Series 1. Most have since had it replaced by the new 2.25l engine, so if it retains the original engine, it is a rare bird.

    Hope this helps,

My understanding is that the only 1958 Landrover in the Australian army was 142800001 which was the one used for trials.

If it is that one the number will be on the inside of the front spring hanger written upside down like a series 1

If it is this vehicle it would be the most collectable Series 2 in the world. That one also had the prototype 2.25 engine
