What was wrong with the springs that required them to be replaced?

The front spring where completely stuffed the passenger side was packed with rubber on top & bottom & it had plastic inbetween all the leaves..
Back ones where just old & sagged..
Doesnt matter now both are in the markets for sale.Need to get a car the daughter can drive & we just cant spend the money on them weekly to get them done..Green one will go once i have a car for the daughter..
I will get some pics of the old springs today for use anyway..

They seemed OK with no sagging - maybe needed a bush or two but I did not have a close look - the plastic between the leaves was most likely a lubricating strip that some springs have.
Good luck with the sale.

Those springs look to be in pretty good order, even considering the broken leaves. If they were mine I would strip them and sand them and grind down the wear steps and reassemble with grease or oil.
They can be made more flexible by discarding some leaves - perhaps the broken ones!
If they don't have enough set then they are worth having hot-reset. PM Isuzurover for advice,
Cheers Charlie
That problem you had/have with the U-Bolts being too short. Is due to your front diff housing being a military one. (Noticed that from your pic) As I just had the same problem with mine (Just installed Para's in my S3 109). The passenger side ones were fine, but drivers side ones were too short. Found out later on that the ones I had for the rear springs fit perfectly. Usually the ones that get supplied with the spring sets, get supplied with U-Bolts for the civvy diff housings. So when one has a military diff housing, you need longer U-bolts on one side or the other..

They just dont seem to listen & happy to give sell you what ever they think will be ok..Actualy i dont think any of my landys have ever had a civvy diff..

Like you, almost all the Series Landrovers I have ever owned except for Series 1 & 2 have had the reinforced front axle, and most the reinforced rear axle. I don't think the distinction is civil/military - the reinforced front axle housing, I believe, was optional with the Series 2 and became standard with the 2a, although as with everything else, it is quite possible that the axle without reinforcing may have been fitted much later to some vehicles, especially 88s. The rear one I think was reinforced on all Series 2 onward 109s. And neither was ever specifically military.
