I've also been told that the wheels were ALWAYS body colour until the late 60's, but then my 1963 workshop manual seems to show a LWB wth lighter coloured wheels. Note that the Expedition Rover site indicates SII wheels to be body colour "except for pastel green and Marine blue which were limestone", and that SIIa and III wheels were all limestone. Perhaps it varied by country?
All the unrestored (and apparently original) SII's and IIa's that I have seen around here have body coloured wheels.
I would say that body colour is probably a safer bet if the original colour is unknown....
What size are the wheels? All the original wheels I have from early SWB's are 5" and too narrow for almost any modern tyre, so I swap them for the LWB 5.5" version which fits 7.5R16 or equivalent tyre.
Edit:
I just had a quick look through my stack of old LR wheels, and there are a couple of 5" rims with cream/limestone paint showing where the (later) green paint has flaked off. I have no idea what vehicle they came from......
