    Some photos required!

Firstly, apologies to admin if this is in the wrong section ... but it does involve my 'ride'!

At the moment, I have pulled apart my 2a 109 (well body) ute for a respray and seal / gasket / mount replacement (while the engine is out anyway!) and I am wondering if anybody can provide pictures and/or info on the Galv strip along the top of (the outside) the tub / under the door windows, which carries on down the sides of the rear past the lights ... if that makes sense?

Am I correct in saying these should be 'bare' Galv, because it's clear they weren't body colour. After carefully taking mine back to bare today, they just look like plain (dull) metal - they were 'painted' over before. Does this mean they need to be re-galvanised? If so, any suggestions?

Basically, I am asking for a photo (close ups would help) so I know what I should be looking at as I have seen a few different versions of the same theme over time!

    Any help is much appreciated!

Probably should be in the 2/2a forum, but the answer is that all Series Landrovers (except a few special purpose ones) and coil sprung 110/90 up to 1987 left the factory with this body capping as it is called unpainted, being galvanised. In the showroom, this is bright, somewhat mottled zinc colour, but dulls with exposure to weather to grey.

If it has worn through to bare steel it really needs regalvanising, which becomes a major job as it needs to be removed and refitted. Accordingly, in many restorations they are painted with something that looks a bit like galvanising - hammertone grey, aluminium, cold galvanising.

    Hope this helps,

Get a can of Cold Gal from bunnings, basically paint with a bit of zinc in it that looks like proper galvanising but a lot cheaper but not as protective.

I got mine regalvanised at a place in Adelaide (Korvest) for a reasonable price. They did a top job. I live 400 kays away and picked the goods up so that I could pack it properly and it wouldn't rub on the journey home. Probally a bit hard for you living in the Alice.
The other option is buff them up with vinegar, I am told "home brand" does the best job (probaly a higher PH).

    Cheers, Mick
