well the great god of land rover spares has assured me that anything can be repaired, but maybe it is time to source another gearbox.
I believe that series 3 boxes have all syncro, that would be a nice thing to have.
do the collective 'we' know if a s 3 box will go into a series 2 a?
and do we know of any around?
offs to markets, ebay, gumtree.
I was looking a few days ago and stumbled across this :) My original gearbox needs a rebuild but I was wondering if it's worth considering one of these instead.

and I would rather rebuild mine and know what is in it for that money.
For that money, it would want to be one hell of a gearbox.
I also wouldn't buy a gearbox from anybody who couldn't spell "manual".
The S3 and S2 boxes are interchangeable provided you also change the clutch, clutch withdrawal mechanism, and piping from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder.Quote:

As has been said above.
It is worth noting that you can fit a SIIa suffix F bellhousing onto a SIII box, so you don't need to change your engine clutch bits over.
The SIII layshaft is a single cluster, much stronger than the SII/SIIa design but way expensive. Where the SIII synchromesh box falls down is that the 1st and 2nd mainshaft gears have been narrowed to make room for the synchro cones. This makes these mainshaft gears quite a lot weaker.
If you do go for an SIII box look for one with the cross hatch reinforcement on the RHS of the gearbox casing. This is likely something like an E or F suffix SIII box.
