Help with Identification - SIIa?

The identity of the vehicle is in the chassis number, as stamped onto the chassis. This, if it Australian built, will be on the left rear back spring hanger, on the bit facing out above the shackle.

Most bits are a bolt-on swap between Series 2/2a/3, so cannot be relied on for identification. (One distinction on the chassis is that the chassis rails on a Series 2/2a 109 are made of four plates welded on the edges - on the Series 3 they are made from two pressed sections with a welded seam in the middle of the top and bottom of the rail. All 88s have the rails made from four plates.)

If it is indeed a fairly late Series 3, then having many of the body panels from a Series 2/2a is likely to be a problem for registration, as it will no longer meet the relevant ADRs.

I've registered and restored quite a few old vehicles, and I can't see someone from TMR picking the difference between S2/a/3 panels (unless they are unthusiasts), nor would the guys I get RWC's through care what panels are on it - so rego doesn't worry me:cool:. Interested in what panels are from what in case I need parts though!

The chassis number on a Series 3 is shown on the attached photograph. It may sort out at least what your chassis is, when it was made and what engine it originally had fitted to it. As long as the chassis was not swapped at some stage. The Meccano like nature of the Series Land Rovers can be both a blessing and a curse with the amount of interchangeable parts.

Also the spring hanger in the photograph is quite long. This also means that my vehicle that the photo was taken off was in military service - apart from the special plates fitted to the passenger side seat box.

What engine is currently fitted to your vehicle by the way? Petrol or Diesel and how many cylinders?

Could you post your chassis number up?

Thanks for the pic, that will help me find it straight away. I haven't picked the vehicle up yet - Too busy taking holidays to Fraser Is.! So I can only go off the pictures I was sent.

Its got the 2 1/4, 4 banger,Petrol engine in it- condition unknown as is was his fathers and hasn't been started or attemped for over 5 years.

The major (relevant) differences between Series 2a and 3 body parts are that Series 3 has a padded dashboard and instruments in front of the driver, headlights in the mudguards (but so have 2a after 1969), and windscreen and door hinges designed to minimise damage to pedestrians. While as you say, it is unlikely that the authorities would spot the differences, it is always possible. Perhaps more likely is an official who expects everything to meet the latest ADRs - and if you gently point out to him that a vehicle of that age does not have to (almost none of the ADRs are retrospective), this may prompt him to check just what it does have to meet - which is where the problems may arise.

Maybe the original chassis rotted and it was replaced with one from a Series III but then registered as a Series III ?

Certainly the front end (wings, grille, bulkhead, steering wheel) is Series II/IIa, handbrake lever Series III.
Bulkhead is pale green (except for the vent panels) but doors & seatbox are yellow. Maybe it was a Series III and the whole front end was replaced at some point.

When you get it ask for any old registration documents/stickers that may contain the chassis number.

Well, my guess is that it was a Series 2A 109 military, as it clearly has quite a number of military features, but as others have rightfully suggested the chassis had rotted away and it's had a chassis replacement, but it would appear that it has had a civilian chassis put under it as all the S3 109 military chassis numbers begin with 94********** the ID plate (if it corresponds) with the chassis will tell all, but that plate states the chassis number is 91394240C, I did a quick check with Calvin but it said it did not recognize the number, so no luck there either, anyway cheers Dennis

Well there's been an interesting development.....picked up the old girl on the weekend and as you can see from the pic, chassis no. does not match the plate......any suggestions?Attachment 101481

I guess Im wondering if there's a way forward? Maybe replate the firewall? (if there's someone out there reproducing plates?) or restamp the hangar?
