I am not up on engine numbers, but there is no doubt it is a petrol 2.25 Series 2 or early 2a engine, probably with matching gearbox.

Give-aways on date will be the timing opening on the flywheel housing, long oil filter, and the upward facing exhaust outlet, all of these continued into 2a production. Carburettot looks like a Stromberg, never fitted from new.

    Hi John,
    Not matching gearbox.
Was told, it was sold to go in a Tinny !!!!
Later 11A head I think, thin thermostat housing.
Maybe earlier Manifold added at some point.
    Stromberg carby is fitted.

Actually, all the bits that distinguish the date, except the engine number, are bolt-on, and hence not very reliable for dating the engine - and I am pretty certain the block remained unchanged until it was replaced by the five bearing engine in late S3 production. Note that the diesel and petrol blocks carry the same part number and this carries on into Series 3.

So the only difference between an early engine and a later one with old bits bolted on is the engine number.

So you've just finished rebuilding a motor... so you go and buy an old relic

Sorry mate, unless you want to be considered as crackers as me, you might want to explain this one.

Actually, if it wasn't for the expense, practicing rebuilding one motor before doing the one you'll actually use makes some sort of manic sense.

Just as a matter of interest (and to scare me), what did it cost to rebuild the motor you've just done? I'll need to be tinkering with Wombat's motor, hopefully less than a full rebuild but I'm not holding my breath, and it'd be good to have a price in the back of my head to help plan for it.

    Hi Crackers.
turned up as it was going on the scap truck.
has a good starter motor and a few other small bits and pieces.
so I paid just over the price of a second hand starter.
the motor was rebuilt 20years ago used for 5years then dry stored.
Barry Marshall local now retired land rover guru was involved with the rebuild.
    so I grabbed it.
modem blew up in last nights storm.
will pm cost on other motor before weekend if I can get a mew modem.
    on prepaid phone.

That engine number does indeed date it to earlyish 2a engine - 7:1 compression ratio.

Series II engine numbers start with a "1", series IIa engine numbers start with a "2". The suffix "a" would make yours a first generation SIIa, but I don't know for how many years they stayed with suffix "a".
