Don't have a micrometer unfortunately but yeah, if they're not too loose a fit I'll probably fix them in place with something like Loctite 609 or 620 "retaining compound".

Still looking at getting the Wolf Defender rims. I'm a bit curious now over the originality or not of the hubs fitted to my vehicle. All four hubs have screw-in rather than press-fit studs for the wheels.

When I searched for replacement screw-in studs for the couple that I'm short of, the product descriptions typically stated "For series II and very early IIA". My IIA is a 1968 build, so hardly qualifies as "very early".

For fitting the Wolf rims to a Defender longer than standard press-fit studs are recommended as theses rims are made of heavier than standard gauge steel.

Anyone have any idea how the length of a standard series screw-in stud compares with a stock Defender stud? Is there a longer than standard screw-in stud available for series Land Rovers too?

All the sleeves on the stub axles of my S3 were/are on there quite tight. Is it possible that the stub axles and/or the sleeves on your LR are aftermarket? The replacement sleeves I've ordered are OEM, (not blue box), so I'll let you know how they fit.

As for the studs, according to the internet 217360 are the original, superseded by 561390, (which are 3mm shorter or so). The only longer ones are MOD studs, which there doesn't seem to be much information on. There is a place called L.R. Fasteners in the UK who could help:

The screw in studs 561590 and press in ones 561886 are listed as alternatives for chassis suffix A-G, with the press in 16mm studs fitted to suffix H.

As far as I know all Australian ones A-G used screw in studs 561590.

However, the usual caution applies - the hubs (some with stub axles for late S3) and indeed the whole axle are interchangeable from Series 2 to Series 3, the hubs themselves back to Series 1, and your vehicle is nearly fifty years old so may well have had bits swapped.

If it's any consolation the spare S3 front axle I just pulled down had a loose sleeve on the passenger side stub axle. I was able to pull it off easily.

Don't know if I'd bother locktighting it on, the inner bearing will press it against the stub axle flange.

    Cheers,

    Tim

I Loctited mine because I could imagine oil escaping underneath the sleeve. It also prevents the sleeve coming loose,

Thanks Tim, I'll try to track down some info on those MOD (Ministry of Defense?) studs.

The saga continues...... Looks like I'm up for a replacement right hand outer swivel housing and steering arm.

Anticipating the rest of my bits to arrive from England next week, I made a start at cleaning the swivel housings for paint, but noticed something wrong with the threads on this drivers side one. When I pulled it down I noticed that the steering arm was fastened with bolts rather than studs, but didn't think much else of it and just put replacement studs and nuts on my order.

Well cleaning it up I noticed that the threads were really poorly cut. Some muppet has done a rather dodgy repair here, drilling the original threaded holes in the housing out and re-tapping for oversize bolts. The holes in the steering arm were also drilled out to accommodate the larger bolts.

The quality of the cut threads isn't acceptable and given the importance of having a well secured steering arm, I think the parts are a write-off.

So, does anyone here have a spare right hand outer swivel housing and steering arm (the one that accepts only one tie-rod end) laying around that they can sell?
