    S2A bit and pieces.

Alright, I've introduced myself in the "introductions" section and posted some pictures of my vehicle; now here are my current restoration problems.....

My (long) rear axle was broken. I've had the center out, removed the snapped-off stub, cleaned and re-assembled. All was fine until I installed my replacement axle - it's too long! The axle engages with the center fine and I even greased the splines to check after pulling it out again that they fully engage, but the other end of the axle still sticks out of the hub an inch or two too far. I can't imagine what I could have stuffed up in re-fitting the diff center so I guess I was supplied the wrong (too long) axle:

My vehicle has the "Rover" differentials, not the "ENV" type. I mail-ordered this axle maybe 6 or 7 years ago now from "Four Wheel Drives" (yeah, this has been a long-term project!), so too late to ask for a refund. It measures 88cm tip-to-tip. Can anyone tell me what Land Rover (or diff) model this axle is from? Were there variations of the Rover diffs that used different length axles?

I don't want to receive the wrong part again!

    My next issue is this:

Like the axle, I've had these sitting on the shelf for years now. They are the front guard indicator and side lamps. They are made by "Britparts" and the quality is absolute garbage - they are unusable. The base plastic of the unit pictured just crumbled upon (gentle!) fitting. The electrical contacts are loose and don't make reliable connection to the bulbs, which don't fit properly either. I couldn't even fit the lenses on a couple of the lights without scourging for some extra long PK-screws as the supplied screws did not make with the ultra-dodgy moldings.

I've bought some poor-quality aftermarket parts over the years, but these lights (now for the bin - which I think owe me about $120-$150) are something else.

Can somebody suggest a replacement (brand) set of lights that I can mail-order with confidence?

And, last of all, I'm getting to the stage where I have to consider what I am going to do with refurbishing my seats. One option is to just mail-order one of these sets......

Land Rover Parts - SERIES II, IIA, III STANDARD SEAT SET
Land Rover Parts - SERIES II, IIA, III DELUXE SEAT SET

..... but for that kind of money I'm a bit apprehensive about buying sight unseen. Has anyone out there bought either of these seat sets themselves and can vouch for or comment on the quality of these seats?

    Cheers,
    Glen

    Hi Glen,

I splurged and purchased a set of lights like this http://www.paddockspares.com/standar...red-lamps.html they seem pretty good although mine haven't been out in the sun much so can't comment on longevity. They are however a sealed unit so no moisture/mud getting in. They are standard size but do look a little different to stock lights if that's an issue for you.

I have bought a set of those standard seats from exmoor trim. They are well made and comfortable. Have a search around you might find them at a more competitive price maybe, although I seem to remember paying $500-600 back in 2012ish when the AU$ was a bunch stronger.

I wonder if your rear axle assembly is the one from a late Series 1, which do have a shorter axle. If this is the case the track will be noticeably narrower at the back.

Seats here are Britpart TR206 | Front deluxe black vinyl seat set - Paddock Spares
I purchased a set a year or two ago.
Bases & backs are MDF whereas the originals were plywood base & pressed steel back. You might want to check with Exmoor what theirs are made of.
Shipping will roughly double the price so from Paddocks about $260 plus freight would be about $520 landed.

    Look OK when fitted.

Paddocks used to list Britax lamps, seem to have changed to Britpart. Not sure if Britax actually made the lamps or outsourced them. Quality was OK but not brilliant but at $5 each plus freight I couldn't complain.

Phone Murray at Four Wheel Drives (he works Mon, Wed & Fri), he would be able to sort out the axle issue. Probably not able to do a refund as the company has changed hands........

A lot of the parts you buy at your 'local' Land Rover supplier are sourced via the UK. Although I like to spend with Australia businesses I find you can save about 1/3rd off local prices by buying from the UK.

I've just measured my spare half shafts. S2a is 887mm long ,27mm diameter. S1 is 868mm long ,31mm diameter. (Length is complete length, end to end )

Thanks for that; so it looks like I do actually have a S2A shaft as it measures the same length as yours. I wonder if my vehicle has been fitted with a S1 rear diff as JDNSW suggests. This evening I'll measure the length of the short-side shaft and the rear track width as well.

To use a S1 axle casing on a S2a LWB would require to move the spring pads towards the outside of the axle casing. Is there any evidence of that? On a S2 LWB the springs are fitted on outriggers ,on a S1 LWB they are fitted directly to the chassis rails.

    Motocycles and classic sportscars

    Hello from Brisbane.

If you are seeking the original Lucas sidelights, indicators and tail lights rather than modern copies they are scarce but not impossible to track down.

There are a few places in the UK and Ireland that source parts for the classic English motorcycles (BSA, Triumph, Norton) and various models of the older sports cars (e.g. MG, Triumph etc) - including the NOS lenses but also the bodies. The lamps used on some Land Rovers were common across a lot of bikes and cars - for example, the Norton Commando 750 had the same Lucas indicator lenses as a Series 3.

I recently purchased a complete set of lights and lenses for my Series 3. Admittedly, it took some searching on the web and perseverance but between three different suppliers I eventually put together a complete set of 8 lights. Prices were fairly reasonable especially for 30-40 year NOS with the "Lucas" wording on them. Quality copies are also available without the "Lucas" bit that are closer in quality to the originals than some of the cheapos on eBay.

    Cheers

    Seats

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Seats for Series trucks are ridiculously expensive to repair or replace - as you no doubt have found out already.

I bought a set of seats direct from Exmoor in the UK for my Series 3 a couple of years ago and they are very good. They made the original seats for Rover in the UK and the current ones are made in much the same way as I understand it.

One issue for the rivet counters is that the brown covering common to Australian assembled vehicles isn't in their range. The dark grey ones look pretty good or you can opt for an Elephant Hide grey look alike for a bit more dosh.

One thing to be aware of when ordering the seats is to specify whether you need the swivel pins on the base of the three seat backs or not.

    Cheers,
