Inertia reel seat belts - where do I mount the inertia reel?

In VIC inertia belts became compulsory from 1/7/88 in an 'off road passenger vehicle'. Check VSI21 (you'll find it on the VicRoads site). So unless the factory fitted them before they became compulsory they were not needed until after the Series III finished.

Interesting that lap/sash only became compulsory from 1/1/71

I guess the dates vary from State to State.

I remember the nut was welded to a strip of steel to stop it rotating when the bolt was tightened. Also the bolt is bigger diameter so the holes must have been drilled out. I can't remember but the bolt was also probably shortened to stop it damaging the hardtop.


The belts I used are from Paddocks and are AU/NZ approved.

Hello from Brisbane.

My 1975 88" came new with retractable belts. I bought a new Falcon ute in that same year and it also has retractable belts. I had always assumed that they became mandatory around that time.

I got a 1981 Series 3 (now mostly incorporated into my 2a or sold!) that had factory inertia reel seat belts. And they were definitely factory fitted - the vehicle had never been registered - came complete with all documentation including a permit to drive from the dealer to the farm, and had never been off the property. And the seat belts had never been used.

Interestingly, my first Landrover, a 1955 Series 1, came fitted with seat belts when I bought it in 1963. But these were not factory, they were fitted by SMHEA. All the cars I have ever owned, starting in 1962, have had seat belts, fitted by me if not already installed.

Oki, Very good, I have seen a few 77- 78 model series and only with lap/sash. Where were they mounted? in the places indicated so far?
Inertia reels were first fitted to the XA falcons as an option and the HQ holdens, becoming standard with the XB and HJ s. I fitted XB inertia reels to my XY, As the floor pans were the same it was a bolt in fit :)

Mounting on my Series 3 was as indicated in earlier posts - reel on the reinforced bit of the transom (it was a trayback ute - and I still have that assembly, the rear lower cab).

This sticker is fitted to my 1975 series 3 SWB hardtop, with Inertia reels, and top corner bracket.
It is on the outer L/H seat box side.

I see what you say,
next post from my phone should be a better picture.
My 2a is 1971 and was delivered to the NSW police new , the station wagon is as original as the roof and other bits do have evidence of lights and aerials fitted,
so I suspect that the inertia reels are original fitment, the cops would have optioned it to the hilt, especially in the safety area, winch and overdrive were also fitted.
