I doubt that the plate on the rear door was ever for a wheel carrier, it is too low to mount a wheel, and would have covered the tow hitch, and most likely dragged the tyre on the ground on the slightest of humps in the road, let alone how it would have caught on crossing driveways.
here is a picture of my rear door, oh, and this is a station wagon, the station wagons had rear sliding windows.
This picture was taken on the day I bought the car.
I seem to recall that the 2a rear door spare wheel mount is not compatible witha tow hitch - if you need a tow hitch you need to use a bonnet mount.Quote:

the other type of mount was much higher up the door, cheers Dennis
that's interesting, I notice your rear door has two hinges, mine has three, perhaps needed for the higher spare mount.
and really, what was mr land rover thinking, even the high mount spare wheel mount still stops use of the tow hitch as the trailer hitch fouls the tyre!
oh well, it is a British thing I guess...
It is not my vehicle Harry, just an image from the net, a friend who passed away about 6 years ago had a Series 3 S/wagon 88" with the low mount arrangement on the rear door, that vehicle now lives in Sydney and I didn't have any images, so I nicked one off the net just for interest sake, and sorry for the thread hi-jack cheers Dennis
