John and Colin, was it the quality of the seal that let the side down?
We had Daihatsu's for years and they used a split seal and it did appear to be a problem.
Cheers, Mick.

Mick,
The 'floppy' split seal had no steel support so as you clamped it in place it would start to collapse.
I had never seen a seal without a steel backing and was surprised that the manufacturer even thought that they'd actually seal !
I'm sure 4 wheel drives sold a split seal some time back but I recon they took a hacksaw to a standard seal......
Colin
Bit of a spelling error there in my last post....it should read didn't appear to be a problem.
However they run grease in the knuckles.
Cheers, Mick.
oh crap ... it now all makes sense with the housing apart. The damn things fill the entire housing including the 'cv joint. Which means both cars i have had here have always been "empty". Infact the last one had a rusty 'cv joint in it when I purchased it (that is why there is no signs of leaking on that car ......... its swivels have obviously been empty ... well for decades!

Some one should have told Land Rover that as a new technology. "Don't lubricate any moving oil filled assemblies, then they won't leak"
