Putting Jade thru her paces with northern visitor Mr One Off an unusual noise manifested itself
In both high and low range four wheel drive a knock knock sound came from what seemed to be the handbrake region, pulling handbrake on a few clicks did nothing to cure it.
This noise is only there on a very steep descent using the engine as a brake. Under power the noise disappears in high and low range, also not there freewheeling on the flat or moderate downhills
I put the problem past my 85 year old mechanic mate and he said its an old Pommy car, and started to tell me about.... to much end float, thrust washers and helical cut gears and not to worry about it. Then the conversation turned to problems he was having with a poor tradie job involving electrolysis between gal and zincalum sheets on his shed, which at the time seemed more important than my noises
Thought I'd throw it out there to the forum, any ideas and is it nothing to worry about
Cheers Paul
Bit hard diagnosing a noise without hearing it, but I would be looking for some part of the engine/gearbox assembly that touches the body or chassis when the engine moves forward under gravity on steep descents, and possibly twists under engine braking. Exhaust system is the most likely but there could be other bits. Possibly contributed to by soft or loose engine mounts, but could be something a bit out of place.
Thanks for your thoughts John I sort of think you are right and I will have a fossick around for something loose.
Cheers Paul
You’ve described it pretty well Paul, a sort of tinny knocking, only at high over-rev, I think John might be onto something with the exhaust, from memory it was that kind of noise.
Have your old mate hang over the tailgate and have a look underneath while you go down that same hill... [thumbsupbig]
(No, I’m not being helpful at all...:bat:)
Very kind of you to let me drive, that sand track was awesome, Jade very much in its element.
Peter.
Doesn't have to be something loose - just inadequate clearance between bits that move with the engine and bits that don't.

Still getting callouts on trucks, but the worse thing is not being able to leave town, been locked in for 18 days now
This is as far up the road I was allowed in a private car, these are cool burns compared to the devastation on Princess Highway going east to Cann River
