Nice work. They must have been tight! I've done a couple of sets with a large punch and hammer, but I do remember wailing of them a fair bit. 😉

I have a query regarding the installation of the steering relay. When I took it out, it was already lose and I think someone had already taken it out or was going to. Anyway, now that I am putting it back, i noticed that it is still lose, as in the body of the relay isnt sitting snug in its home. This was still ith the top bolts lose, but the lower retainer internal diameter is also not a snug fit. So even if I did both top bolts and bottom retainer I think there would still be movement when load is applied.
So how are these supposed to fit?
EDIT: Here is a link I found that relates to my issue.

The relay is normally a loose fit in the chassis. The top bolts hold it in place at the top and the lower pressed steel retainer should be a tight fit to hold it in place at the bottom once the 4 bolts are done up. The gap between the body and the tube in the chassis is to hold road dirt, water & corrosion products to eventually rust the relay into place !
If the lower retaining plate is a loose fit on the steering relay then there probably would be movement. So........is it the retaining plate worn or a pattern relay where the diameter for the plate to locate on is too small. You'd have to measure & post the details or find another retainer to try out.
If it's the retainer they are available https://www.allfourx4.com.au/217694

Lol - yes it must be a design feature to let the rust truly prevent any movement in the future. OK so I have another look and yes the collar piece that makes contact with the relay is flogged out - grooved and warped. So I pulled the one from the 109 (after much cursing) and after cleaning it found it to be much better, but still slightly lose. So I managed to tap the collar edge with a hammer and got it to a point where its a tight fit
Thanks for the info to confirm my thinking, at one point I thought something major was wrong with the chassis hole!

Making progress... got both swivels done, diff and front springs mounted. The only issue i have is trying to source the short half shaft as splines are buggered. Ill see if i can make one from the spares but i remember those where also stuffed. Anyone got one in good nick for sale?
EDIT: I have now had a helping hand from Grey Ghost! Many thanks Tom for the assist, greatly appreciated.

Darn Carlos, you're ahead of me. My swivels are still sitting on the garage floor !!
I'm still putting my back axle together, hopefully finish that tonight, then it's on to the front.
Cheers,
John
SORRY ! I had about 20 of them , I got sick of tripping over them about 10 years ago I kept trying to give them away but nobody wanted them so sent them off to the scrap man . I also had good S2 & S3 guards that nobody wanted they went at the same time . You know what it is like when what the wife calls junk is laying around they want it cleaned up. I had it all stored in the front pergola out of the weather .![]()
