    My first series 2a project

Been a while since I posted on the forum, although I do come in a check every so often. But this time I have a reason to post, got myself a very (VERY) worn out, rusted, dented, NEEDS MAJOR TLC 1967 Series 2a 109 in pretty much un-modified state (2.25 petrol, original running gear etc).

I have been working on another project, a 1977 RRC 2 door but I always wanted to get a series. So now I have this little beauty I am about to organise a list of what to purchase and get my hands dirty over winter and beyond.

Ill be readin loads on here about them, but also not sure if any of you out there got 2a parts that I may require (eg - one of the window wiper motors needs replacing)...

Anyway, ill post up vids of progress etc in much the same way I did for the RRC. Its a bitter sweet time, losing the RRC project to gain the 2a project and unfortunately I couldnt keep both

I will post some pics soon as I have yet to pick it up!

Hi mate, didn't know you were moving the RRC on, but I do understand about having too many projects. Assuming you'll be jumping into this now the Viscount is on the road. (Oh, for those that like old vans, check out Carlos's rebuild thread on this beauty - 1966 Viscount Ambassador 20' E2340 | Classic Caravans)

As you find what parts need replacing, you'll be able to find out if there's good second hand ones out there or if new ones are the go - everyone loves a series resto, so I'm sure you'll be getting plenty of people looking in here that can offer good advice.

There's some first rate builds going on at the moment so have a look in the series 3 section too at a few of those, you'll get heaps out of them and start to understand your vehicle much better.

Oh, and I expect pics of the new acquisition as soon as you are able.

Thanks mate for the kind words! At this stage, i m yet to determine if this 2a will be a rebuild jobbie or a parts bin ready for another not so deteriorated 2a. The main bonus being i have access to parts from not as badly neglected 2a so i will wait and see where it goes.

I am truly sad not being able to keep the RRC as it would of been great to have that, the disco and series. My other half is project fatigued and she is just a by-stander!

So this is a bit of a heads up for when i post an intro vid of the 2a that viewers wont keel over in shock lol.

Finally got her home. First thing I did was clean the engine as it was caked with dirt and oil and take the head off as the prev owner told me it had blown a hg and water got into cyl 4. So, he certainly was right, there was little pool of water and some surface rust. Not sure how long it takes to form rust but perhaps been sitting there for a while. I cleaned it all up and poured oil on each piston and turned the engine with the crank handle. Turns smoothly and no roughness.

So next is to continue cleaning so its ready to start stripping so i can junk the chassis, parts that cannot be used and possibly bulk head. Ill post up vids as i go and as i know nothing about series would like comments

The pic below shows the rough condition its in. Price reflected this so not worried. I have a donor series so any build will be a combination of vehicles lol. Other option is to try find another s2a and have the parts from this one.

Seen worse mate - good to see you'll be doing videos of this along the way too - I've always enjoyed the ones on the caravans you've done.

So I got the head out due to blown head gasket, so can one re-use the bolts again or it is like a diesel where you need to replace?

You can reuse the head bolts. If you don't already have them I suggest getting both a (factory) workshop manual and a parts book. The latter is mainly to show how things go together, as it has a lot more pictures than the workshop manual, although you need to use some caution, as pictures in some cases only show early parts, not later ones, even though both part numbers are given.

You can get these on CD from the AULRO shop.
