Help in dating a S2 pls.

    I picked up a S2 from a scrap yard just before Xmas. My first S2 but my 5th LR (2ŚRRC 1xP38a 1xL322 and a S2Disco)
Kept the best one, the P38a!

I trying to date it. Front spring hanger right? 8-9digit number with a letter right?
Hmmmmm just "234" stamped on hanger half way down.

No compliance plate fitted, very rough almost illegible plate possibly a Knock down local assembly. Holden motor.

    Any ideas?
Can the gearbox or diff tell me anything?

    Thx Martin

Nearly all Series 2/2a you will find in Australia were assembled here. And Australian assembled Series Landrovers have the serial number on the outside of the LH rear spring hanger, at the back of the spring. If readable, the number will give the age using the Calvin on line calculator.

Compliance plates were never fitted to Series 2, being introduced during Series 3 production, but there should be an identification plate on the firewall in front of the gear lever. This is, however, an unreliable guide to identity, as it is only held by four screws and is easily removed or moved between vehicles.

Gearbox or axle serial numbers can give an idea, but these are easily swapped between vehicles, and hence are unreliable.

Thx for that.....REAR LH (kerb side) hanger doh!
    The ID plate has gone.
I found a pair or VIC reg plates in cabin but Vicroads say their full records with vin/chassis numbers dont go back far enough. Its only F rego so that makes it about 1986sh. But its a S2orS2a

    Good grief....
    Found the number? Yey!!!
    34700505a
    CalVIN says thats a S2a
    Model years 1966-1971
    BUT
With the prefix "A" says S2a from Oct61 to March63.
    Sort of contradicts itself?

You're getting confused by one of the flaws in the CalVIN program, which reports standardised suffix lists based upon UK built 4 cylinders (25??****? sequence).

Your 34700505A is a late series IIA 109 inch wheelbase 6 cylinder which has its own suffix sequence, while I have no data on your vehicle, I can inform you that vehicles within 30 serials of your chassis number (including the correct "A" suffix) were being delivered to customers in NSW from mid July 1967. I would assume your vehicle was assembled at the PMC Enfield plant in early to mid July 1967.

    Hope this helps.

(BTW: some of the very last suffix H Series IIA built in 1971 and 1972 were fitted with compliance plates)

    Sensational. Thankyou.
Hey, based on your assumptions of build date, Sandy (that's her name) and I are only 2 weeks apart in actual birthdays! Ha! I tell ya tho, I think she is in better shape. 🤐
