    Series 2a oil

Just wondering what oils you use in your Series 2a motors, and why.

Info I've got is that it should be 15W40.

Does anyone have a particular brand they prefer,, and why you prefer it?

If, the engines been rebuilt reasonable recently, lets say in the last five or so years I'm wondering would you treat it as a new motor, kind of, so maybe said oil is preferred, but, if the motor has never been rebuilt, should perhaps a slightly different oil be used.
I know there are oils that are "kinder" to older engines,, although I'm not sure just how kind kind is, but you can see on some labels that "this oil suits older engines", which I think they're referring to high mileage, not newly rebuilt engines of course.

    So, just wanting people's thoughts.
I'm not sure whats in mine at present, but I'm looking at either the Castrol or Shell version. Doing a change before we take off to Corowa on Sunday.

    Cheers in advance people's.

    Marcus,
Old fashioned 20w50 should be OK.
Kmart have Shell 20/50 (for older engines) $20 for 5 litres. It's in the red containers.

I've been running the Series I on it for the last 10 years or so......

Most of my others are using cheap 20/50 when it's on sale at Supercheap/Autobarn etc., from memory it's Gulf Western. To be fair though this is in vehicles that aren't on-the-road yet so infrequently started.
Wallit uses a cheap diesel engine oil, usually purchased when it's on special.

Any oil you can buy today will be vastly better than the oil that the engine was designed for!. If you maintain the specified oil change intervals, the more high tech oils are a waste of money.

Service intervals - my Series 2a handbook says 5,000km/6 months, the Series 3 handbook, 10,000km/ 6months. I use 5,000 for my 2a. Both however specify 6 months, and few owners today will be doing even 5,000km in six months. The manual specifies changing the filter only every second oil change, but I have always changed the filter every change.

Series 2a specifies 20W-30, and Series 3 specifies 20W-50 (probably because the greater viscosity modification became available). I use 20W-50 of a reputable brand.

The oils specified as "this oil suits older engines" simply have higher viscosity, which maintains oil pressure and hence quietness on engines that are getting to have somewhat out of tolerance clearances due to wear.

The higher viscosity oils are more suitable for the warmer parts of the country, remembering that the handbook specification is for a maximum temperature of 32C. If you are operating in the colder parts in winter there is a good case for using a lower viscosity oil 15W30 or even 10/W20, but remember that these engines have higher clearances than most modern engines, even when new or newly overhauled.

    Hope this helps.

I usually pick up the Castrol GTX 15-40 from Supercheap when its on sale, also add some Proma MBL8 with the oil to 'try' quieten her down a bit
