I have a '61 S2 . Positively identified by numbers on engine block, gearbox, axles, chassis and importantly, the same number as on the chassis stamped on the plate with instructions re transfer gears operation on firewall in front of main gear lever.

Have a workshop manual dated December 1963 that came with vehicle. In the front has details on all these numbers. For Series 2, all 9 figure numbers that start with 1. For Series 2A, 8 figure number starting with 2 then suffix a.

For Series 2's only - not S2A, the FOURTH digit of all the numbers listed above signifies the year. ie 8 for 1958, 9 for 1959, 0 for 1960 and 1 for 1961. Mine has Vehicle No 153102893. Info in manual indicates 1531 is Series 2 109 Petrol , C.K.D. R.H.D. ie Assembled from Complete Knock Down kit and Right Hand Drive. Engine block number, which I am sure is original 151129681. Cylinder head was apparently replaced in 1975. Some differences from earlier one, especially conventional looking thermostat instead of skirted one while older type water pump still on block. Has a repaired Series 3 exhaust manifold which is apparently less prone to crack or bust than earlier 'swan neck" ones of which first type on 2286 cc motor was so exhaust pipe went out though guard. Note the first 1958 Series 2s were originally fitted with leftover Series 1 two litre motors with overhead inlet and side exhaust valves like later 2.6 litre Land Rover 6 cylinder motors. Because of large bulge on left side, exhaust also went through guard.

Then further re this vehicle being assembled from a C.K.D. kit: There is another small plate screwed on the firewall on it: Produced by Pressed Metal Corp, Sydney Then has Body number LRL 4868 and Serial Number 1094868. I gather PMC was a Rover subsidiary and saw somewhere on aulro that its records are apparently gone.

Anyway, looks like the numbers quoted from you vehicle are from a plate affixed by place where it was assembled, which should mean something if you can figure out where and access their records. However, best to just find the vehicle "car" number on firewall plate and chassis. From first four numbers, anyone with same info as in workshop manual I have can check and see what it is according to Land Rover records. Could post it here - and /or maybe in case I don't get around to looking and no one else replies, send me a PM.

As Mox says, the only number that is really useful is the chassis number. It will be on the LH rear back spring hanger, on the vertical face above the shackle, and is repeated on the plate on the firewall with gear lever instructions, although this is an unreliable source of information, as it may be missing or off another vehicle, being only screwed on.
