The are supposed to be notched, I don't recall ever seeing a smooth one,
You adjust them up till the shoes bind then back them off one or two notches. Adjustment would be pretty random without the notches & they would likely move out of adjustment.
Hello All,
I just received a set of Bearmach Brake Adjuster "Snails" in the post. The edge of the silver cam is notched.
Are the notches a Bearmach brand special feature? Or are all new snail cams regardless of their manufacturer meant to be notched?
Prior to the new Bearmach snail cam kit arriving the only snails I have seen are the ones that were already fitted to my old Series vehicles before I bought them and they are all smooth edged = no notches.
Are all these previously fitted snails ones that have worn out to become smooth over time? If so does it matter?
Kind regards
Lionel

The only smooth ones are ones that are worn out, and won't stay adjusted. The notches are what make sure it stays in adjustment. Without notches, the combination of the spring pressure, the slope on the cam, and the vibration from bouncing on the road will inevitably let the adjustment slacken off.

Thank you John and Going Bush,
It looks like I will be ordering a couple more sets of brake adjustment snails next pay-day then. Get some new ones that come with notches in them!
Kind regards
Lionel
I personally haven't had much luck with the aftermarket snails, they seem to be made out of hard cheese.
I've filed notches back into original snails rather than remove them and fit something inferior.
