When I talked to the authority, the only classifications (type) they have on the system are: Sedan, Station Wagon, Camper Van, Utes, Trucks, Vans and Bus up to 2.9 tonne

So ill have to chat with the inspector, see perhaps if a comment can be made (there is a comments section in the inspection form) that the vehicle is a Utility and as such is a multi-type vehicle. Not sure if that will fly tho with either the inspector or the authority, but ill try!

Late to the party here but I’d guess that it would be best to register it as a wagon if you want to have it seat more than 3 people. Once it’s registered as a wagon it’s easy to use as a Ute, but not the other way around as I doubt you’d get a Ute registered with more than 3 seating positions.

As has been mentioned previously, it is acceptable to temporarily remove rear seats without affecting how it is classed in most states (not sure I Tassie, you’d need to check) - if you get pulled up it’s simple to say ‘I took the seats out to go to the tip’ etc.

When my RRC was on the road, the back seat spent half it’s time in the garage, it was much more useful that way.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Why not just register as a sedan - I am thinnking here something the equivalent to a two door 5 seat BMW convertible. You can have the top down and have people sitting in the back, top up like a normal car - seats in use or not.

Same with a series - top down, passengers in the back seats, top up the same.

My Haflinger was on full registration in Tas and is a 4 seater - was registered as a Haflinger Tray - I see Tray is not on your list of options yet that is what my rego docs say.

Here in the ACT it is termed a Light Truck as is my 101 - 2 tonne difference in weights.

While the prudent this was to go and ask the authorities about this, often it is better to present the vehicle and take it from there - eg soft top and seats in the back.

Good luck with it - not easy.

You are both correct, this is the advice given by the person at Service Tas. He said to go with Sedan and then ill have rego for passengers at the back. BUT he also said to discuss with the inspector as to what is best - no doubt it will be the same as I intend to have it with the hardtop on on the day of inspection.

The joys of dealing with an old vehicle that the 'system' cant cater for
