Well another day of rookie mistakes!!!

So I found out the hard way that the rear diff from a series 2a LWB is different to a series 2 SWB.... Spring mounts are all different. Of course I found out after I'd removed the old one and tried to fit the new one... Measure it up next time I hear you say...

Oh well... So if there is old oil and crud in the drums is the a good sign that the seal between the diff and brake is gone? Looks like I'll rebuild the old one.

I would re-furb anyway. They are incredibly easy to work on compared to fronts. The housing is the only thing thats different, bu the guts (Diff and axles) can be used. The seals are cheap and easy to fit (assuming they are the correct OD unlike mine that I had to shave off .5 mm to fit).

The oil can be either the axle seal and/or the brake cylinders leaking.

PS: I have made numerous rookie mistakes myself! I have a few posts admitting to this... part of the learning curve

Some eagle eye here should have picked up that its a LWB rear diff housing ,
Easy to see the Spring perches are not below the bump stops in above photo, as they are on a SWB housing. TBH I didn't notice, despite having moved the spring perches on a Salisbury to fit one into a SWB !!

Lol - yep, BUT I only noticed the difference on mine when I was looking at how to mount the rear shocks... realising they didnt have the lower brace as its fixed to the housing itself. It was then the 'lights went on' for me

Tonight I fitted to new front propshaft without a hitch!
Although I did notice a couple of missing nuts on the rear diff while I was underthere. My explain the leaking diff (well at least one of the leaks)

New rear propshaft on the way, but I think I'll diff leak first!
