It does have a thread on it, but (at least on my 2.25) the thread didn't go all the way into the block. I cleaned the thread as best as I could, screwed it in, and used a sealant although I can't remember which one!

GG they were threaded and screwed in quiet easily but as you say the thread doesn't seem to go all the way through the head, screwed them in as tight as i could with sealant in the threads.

Part way in? Sounds normal for a Tapered (Gas) thread as it needs to tighten as it goes deeper.

Job well done & I think we all learned something about that part of the donk. Have never seen that much detail on that assy, so thanks for that , I'm sure it will be of interest to others here who intend to go down this path one day.

Who supplied the Plugs? OZ or UK?

Wee set back this morning once things warmed up number one plug and number three plug were blowing a bit of froth
Pulled off the rocker gear removed and cleaned the plugs and reinstalled them with a different sealant see what happens tomorrow when sealant has set
Does anyone know what thread the plugs are I may have to retap the head if things keep leaking
On the subject of rockers my eighty eight year old mechanic mentor suggested tappet clearance might do better at 0.12 in Australian conditions, apparently back in the day with Austin’s etc there was a lot of problems with clearances specified for UK rather than Aussie temperatures
He suggested give it a go and if they are noisy pull back to Rover specs

I have run 0.010" on Series 2/2a, both petrol and diesel, in Australia, including central Australia in summer, over the last sixty years with no issues whatever with valves (can't say the same about the 2l Series 1 exhaust valves).

In the end I set them at 0.011 they seem quiet enough
Core plugs no longer leak but I have a very slight oil leak at a head bolt, no doubt I will have to remove the head to fix this so I’ll put the tappets back to spec then.
I also changed the oil and filter as water from the leaking plugs had got into it.....oil pressure went from 20/25 psi to 45/50psi with new oil.
Its possible my mate was referring to F type heads will ask him

Usually when I decide to paint there’s a hatch and I wonder why I’m not fishing instead
