With Sid done, thought there might be interest in how it all stacked up. I took this on as a project as much for me as for the truck, i was going through some tough times and this was a brilliant distraction. What I did decide was to do everything I could even if that meant learning new skills, it also meant lots of tools. With welders, compressors, etc… I probably spent $4k on kit.
So, restoration big expense items were:
- engine machining $1300
- engine and gearbox parts (everything) $800
- paint $1200
- upholstery $1100
- hood & hoops $2k
- parts car $400
- galvanising $150 (bargain!!)
- loom $1300 ( 1.5 looms as I set fire to first)
- chassis repair panels $600
- new doors $800
- exhaust $500
- general parts $3k
- replacement parts getting rid of britpart $800
All up…. I’m probably not a long way off $20k and I did all my own engine building, welding, bodywork and painting. If you’re farming it out the. Double that.
The value of Sid means I have broken even, but you wouldn’t make a profit if you had to pay for the labour.
Forgot, one mashed thumb that still doesn’t work properly
It was a great project ( would have been 2 years if not for border closures) and there’s still work to do, but not huge.
Big shout out to Bruce Sharma for the looms, Body and Paint in Adelaide, southern customs for the upholstery, bearmach and Adelaide Galv.
Shame goes to britpart and red earth hoods, both shocking.
Cheers everyone for the help and encouragement.

Is the van going to be a resto mod or all original?
Could imagine it with a mid mount 6.2 litre, tubbed rear end etc, matching colours with Sid!!
Will watch with interest as i did with Sid.
My son wants me to resto mod the series III with a Barra Motor.
Back in Adelaide and the new prop shafts have arrived from Bearmach... problem is the rear shaft is 75mm short... it don't reach the back diff and is a lot shorter than the old one. No idea what that would be off or of there is something weird with Sid.
So the old one has gone back on with a new set of hardy spicer UJ's (as the aftermarket ones I had used last time have ***t themselves already).
Checked around for play and loose stuff in the diffs and all as intended, so if this overrun issue doesn't go away, I suspect the gearbox is coming out. Head scratching though as I've emptied and filtered the oil from both the box and the transfer box and it is clean with no bits or sparkles.
Not that it helps, but maybe the new rear prop shaft is for a Salisbury? Looks like there's about 40 mm difference to the beginning of the slip joint between the Rover and Salisbury shafts I have on hand.
I'm 95% sure the shorter shaft is for a Salisbury...

That’s exactly it! Side by side comparison was the same on mine. Challenge now is bearmach wants it posting back.
Well test drive today has some good news, the new drive shafts have made a big difference. I think the old shaft was causing the knocking when driving. No more knocking.
But, there’s something loose in the transfer box.
So gearbox is coming out.
It would have been coming out anyway on closer insurrection the new output shaft seals are leaking. No surprise, every other seal on Sid has leaked since I fitted repro parts.
The oem replacements have been fine.
